Post Football/Soccer - Haitian-American Josmer Altidore score to lead NYRed Bulls 1-0 over Chicago Fire

Haitian-American Josmer Altidore score again to lead NYRed Bulls 1-0 victory over Chicago Fire
East Rutherford, N.J. -- He has become one of the most incredible stories during the stretch run for the MLS playoffs.
The New York Red Bulls' driving force toward the post-season doesn't even have a learner's permit and needs his mother to take him to and from practice and games.
But that certainly doesn't phase 16-year-old rookie forward Jozy Altidore, who doesn't need much tutoring on how to score a goal. Altidore struck again to keep the Bulls' MLS post-season hopes alive and kicking, connecting for the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire at Giants Stadium Saturday night.
That gave Altidore an astonishing three goals in 159 minutes over four pro games as he helped the Bulls (8-11-11, 35 points) move into a fourth-place with the Kansas City Wizards for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth. K.C. (9-13-8, 35) played Real Salt Lake to a 3-3 tie Saturday night.
"I suspect this whole thing as usual will go down to the last day," said Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena, obviously referring to the Bulls' regular-season finale against the Wizards at the stadium Oct. 14.
The second-place Fire (12-10-8, 44), who had captured the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup title Wednesday night, was the hottest MLS club with an 8-1-1 mark in its last 10 games.
Arena can thank Altidore for that. The Newark, N.J. native certainly has impressed his coach.
"He's calmed me down a little bit," he said. "He's a very mature young man. I'm very surprised with the kind of composure he has."
Added Altidore: "John Harkes (assistant coach) told me to go out there and just have fun, relax and play. It is a big game. We all know that. We just have to relax and play our game. That's what we did tonight."
Arena said he decided to give Altidore his first start "because he's proven to be one of our better attacking players."
Of course, Arena's attacking options were limited because Youri Djorkaeff was on an official visit with French president Jacques Chirac in Armenia Edson Buddle was out with a toe injury.
Altidore's rise from just another rookie to an offensive force has been a meteoric one.
Two weeks ago, Altidore scored the lone goal in a 1-0 triumph over the Columbus Crew, which was the MLS goal of the week.
Last week he connected for the last goal in the Red Bulls' 4-3 loss at D.C. United.
On Saturday night Altidore's latest goal wasn't as spectacular as his Columbus score, but it was just as important and dramatic. This time he slotted home a Marvell Wynne cross from the right wing from three yards past goalkeeper Matt Pickens in front of a crowd of 15,835.
"I realized I had to get into the box because he's (Wynne) probably the fastest guy in the league," Altidore said. "I figured I had to get into the box and he was going to put it in. He gave it to me on a silver platter. All I had to do was be there."
Altidore, who was talking to his mother Gisele before the media swarmed around him and his locker, was ecstatic.
"It's great," he said. "I mean this feeling is unbelievable. I'll never get sick of it or used to it. It's a great feeling to score a game-winning goal for your team."
Wynne, however, did not enjoy such a happy ending. He was red-carded for his second yellow card of the match in the 81st minute. That means he will miss Saturday?s game at the Colorado Rapids.
"It was pretty harsh," Arena said of the cards.
In a marked contrast to other recent efforts, the Red Bulls came out strong in the opening half.
"I think the guys played quite well for 90 minutes," Arena said. "It's been our most consistent game to date."
The Red Bulls outshot the Fire, 14-4, and allowed only one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Jon Conway took care of that opportunity, smothering Ivan Guerrero's shot at the top of the penalty area in the 45th minute.

Post Wynne-to-Altidore extinguishes the Fire, 1:0

Peter Canero is not dead. But more on that later, for we have to praise Josmer Altidore. If Metro make the playoffs this year, it could because of that 16-year-old. Altidore, who two weeks ago scored the lone goal in the win against Columbus, repeated that feat tonight, knocking in a pin-point Marvell Wynne cross as Metro beat Chicago to keep their playoff hopes alive. With Salt Lake coming back to tie Kansas City, Metro and the Wiz are now tied for the last playoff spot with 35 points, and Metro owns the tiebreaker. Both teams have two games left, and play each other in the finale at Giants Stadium.
After Tony Meola allowed four goals vs DC, Jon Conway came back in net. Chris Henderson also came back to start on his usual place on the left wing, as Dema Kovalenko shifted right and Markus Schopp sat. But the big change was the insertion of Altidore in the starting lineup for Youri Djorkaeff, who was invited by French president Jacque Chirac on an official visit to Armenia.
Referee Jair Marrufo's incompetence started to show early, as a Metro player was taken down at the edge of the Chicago penalty area, but no foul was called. Metro, led by a resurging Amado Guevara, controlled the ball for most of the first half, but nevertheless needed a huge save from Conway in the last minutes to enter the break scoreless. That turned out to be the Fire's lone shot on goal, as Metro defense, led by Jeff Parke, was back to its best form.
Early in the second, Henderson sent in a pass onto an onrushing Dema Kovalenko that was unfortunately a few inches too far. The Ukrainian still managed to control the ball, but the ensuing shot went wide of the target. However, soon after that, Metro struck. In the 60th minute, Wynne took a pass from Danny O'Rourke and outraced Chicago up the right wing, sending in a perfect low ball onto Altidore. Josmer roofed it into the Fire net for his third goal in four games.
As the game went on, Marrufo's calls and non-calls became more and more ridiculous. In the 80th minute, a clear foul on the Fire was missed, but the ensuing one, on Wynne, wasn't, as Marvell's second yellow gave him the marching orders. He left to a standing ovation.
And then there was Peter Canero, entering in the 83rd minute to take over at right back. Oh, Canero! Alexi Lalas promised us that you will solve our wing woes, but at this point we'll take some mop-up duty in the back. Hell, you might need to start next week with Wynne suspended. Thanks, Marrufo.

Post Teenage sensation continues to lead the way

Teenage sensation continues to lead the way
If the New York Red Bulls make the MLS Cup playoffs, they can thank several people. But probably most of all, they can thank Jozy Altidore. The 16-year old, Newark-born striker did it again Saturday night, scoring the game-winning goal against the Chicago Fire in a 1-0 Red Bulls victory.
For young Altidore, this was his first professional start and he pretty much went the distance, being subbed out in stoppage time following 90 minutes. Obviously, Head Coach Bruce Arena has some confidence in the kid.
You could make the case that no one is scoring, so why not start him and I agree with that. However, to give him 90 minutes in a must-win game tells me that the coaching staff must like what they see.
Altidore now has three goals in five games played as a professional. Those three goals have come in the last four games.

Here?s something more impressive: His three goals have come in just 159 minutes and two of his three goals were game-winners.
In my last column, I wrote this, after congratulating Altidore for his spectacular game-winning goal vs Columbus:
If the Red Bulls have to rely on a 16-year old player to carry them to the playoffs, they will fall short of their goal.
My reasoning was that the veterans would have to carry the team. That Amado Guevara, Youri Djorkaeff, and Edson Buddle would have to score the big goals. I didn?t even know, at that point, how much playing time Altidore would get.
Well, at times, soccer can be a funny game. Barring injury, Altidore might get two more starts. He may actually carry this team to the playoffs, although I still think some veterans have to step up. It?s a great story nonetheless, that a 16-year old player, born in the shadows of Giants Stadium, is giving this team a chance to make the playoffs.
Two more games to go and the Red Bulls do control their own destiny. They are on the road in Colorado Saturday and back home Oct. 14 against Kansas City, the team that stands in their way on this playoff run.
The challenge now is for the veterans to do what a 16-year old has already done ... step up.
