Five teams head to Jamaica for Caribbean Football Union Club Championships
published: Sunday | November 26, 2006
FIVE TEAMS from three countries will be spending time in Jamaica over the next few weeks for the Caribbean Football Union Club Championships set to begin on December 1.
Coming to the island on Thursday will be Haiti's Aigle Noir, Curaçao's SV Centro Social Deportivo Barber and the United States Virgin Islands' Positive Vibes.
On December 7, Haiti's Baltimore Sportif will arrive, while Deportiva Banda Abou get here on the 9th.
Not much is known about the visitors' pedigree, however, teams like Centro Barber have recently been performing well at the top of their leagues while not showing much before.
Barber have won the Netherlands Antilles Championships four times in a row and added the Curaçao League to that list four times over the same period. They also played against Portmore United in 2005 but lost the two-leg semi-final 4-2 on aggregate.
Positive Vibes were in the tournament last year as well and return this year as the St. Thomas League regular season champions.
Last year they were beaten 5-3 on aggregate in the first round by Northern United, who eventually made it to the semi-finals.
Aigle Noir come to the competition with a little more history after winning their local league for the first time in 1953 before doubling their tally in 1955. Having been off the radar for a long time, they have much to prove but Haitian teams usually have quality. The three teams arriving on Thursday will be hosted by the Harbour View Football Club in Group A of the CFU Club Championships first round.
