Bermuda set to host Digicel Caribbean Cup play-offs (Group J) 3rd place Team
Bermuda?s bid to qualify for next January?s final round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Trinidad and Tobago received an enormous shot in the arm yesterday with news the Island could play host to a triangular play -off involving the third-placed finishers from the competition?s second round next month at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
It is understood Bermuda Football Association (BFA), local football?s governing body, is currently trying to arrange hotel accommodation for incoming teams and obtain use of the Island?s premier sporting facility for next month?s triangular play-off that will determine the eighth and final spot in the final round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup alongside the six group qualifiers and hosts Trinidad and Tobago next January.
Bermuda and Haiti finished third among Group G and Group I respectively, and now await the eventual third placed team from Group H consisting of Guadeloupe, Guyana, Dominican Republic and Antigua and Barbuda that will be decided tonight in Guyana.
BFA officials declined to comment on the matter yesterday, but did promise to make a statement ?later? this week.
Bermuda finished third in Group G in the Caribbean last week after losing 3-0 to St. Vincent, defeating Bahamas 4-0 and then drawing 1-1 against host country Barbados at the National Stadium in Waterford, St. Michael?s.
Meanwhile, national coach Kyle Lightbourne says hosting next month?s play-off on local soil can only enhance the team?s chances of qualifying for the final round.
?This is something we are hoping for because everybody knows how the pitch (at the NSC) plays. It?s even and very fast,? Lightbourne said.
?This would certainly be a welcome boost for us to play here. I think we would have a more vocal crowd in Bermuda and this would certainly help us qualify for the finals.?
The last occasion when throngs came out to support the national football team at the NSC was during the 2004 World Cup qualifying second round home-and-away series with El Salvador.
?That was a fantastic atmosphere,? Lightbourne added. ?And, without a doubt, having the home field advantage and a good crowd behind us will only increase our chances of qualifying for the Digicel Cup finals.?

Bermuda to host play-offs ? confirmation expected
Caribbean Football Union (CFU) officials are expected to confirm Bermuda as hosts for next month?s Digicel Caribbean Cup play off involving the third-placed teams from the second round of group matches by the end of the week, sources told The Royal Gazette yesterday.
Bermuda and Haiti finished third among Group G and Group I respectively, and still await the eventual third placed team from Group H consisting of Guadeloupe, Guyana, Dominican Republic and Antigua and Barbuda that was scheduled to be decided last night in Guyana.
As of yesterday Bermuda Football Association (BFA) were still engaged in negotiations over accommodation for visiting teams and had already met with trustees of the National Sports Centre (NSC) over the use of the facility on December 12, 14 and 16.
?The BFA have requested to have use of the facility for the Digicel Cup. And we have confirmed that the facility is available for the dates they (BFA) have requested,? stated Sean Tucker, deputy chairman of the NSC Board of Trustees.
The eventual winner of next month?s triangular play-off will claim the eighth and final spot in the final round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup alongside the six group qualifiers and hosts Trinidad and Tobago next January.
Bermuda finished third in Group G in the Caribbean last week after losing 3-0 to St. Vincent, defeating Bahamas 4-0 and then drawing 1-1 against host country Barbados at the National Stadium in Waterford, St. Michael?s.
?This is something we are hoping for that would certainly be a welcome boost for us. I think this would certainly help us qualify for the finals,? national coach Kyle Lightbourne told The Royal Gazette earlier this week.
?Without a doubt having the home field advantage and a good crowd behind us will only increase our chances of qualifying for the finals.?
l All of the Island?s Premier Division teams were kept apart during yesterday?s first round draw of the 2006-07 Bermuda Football Association (BFA) Challenge Cup held at Captain?s Lounge.
Perennial FA Cup giants PHC and Somerset Trojans were drawn against Commercial outfit Key West Rangers and Division One leaders Ireland Rangers.
Zebras will host Rangers at Southampton Oval while Trojans travel across Watford Bridge to do battle with Ireland Rangers.
Two-time defending FA Cup champions North Village Rams are at home at Bernard Park against Division One side X Roads, Paget Lions host St. George?s Colts at White Hill Field and St. David?s Warriors take on Devonshire Colts at Lords.
Remaining first round cup ties see four-time FA champions Boulevard tackle Somerset Eagles at BAA Field and Prospect United host Commercial side Valley FC at Police Field.
The Women?s FA Cup draw, meanwhile, has pitted Prospect United Females against Lady Rams at Police Field and cup holders Lady Cougars against Somerset Hurricanes at White Hill Field.

All matches will take place on February 4, 2007.
