Soccer Football/Soccer - NYRed Bulls trade Amado Guevara to Chivas USA for Designated Player & 3rd round pick

GUEVARA'S GONE: Dealt to Chivas for designated player slot
The New York Red Bulls Monday announced they had dealt star midfielder Amado Guevara to Chivas USA for a designaed player slot and a third-round pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft.
Guevara, 30, will be reunited with former MetroStars coach and current Chivas coach Bob Bradley, who brought the Honduran international to the club in 2003.
?Amado is a tremendous player and his contribution to our team in the past has been undeniable,? Red Bulls sporting director and coach Bruce Arena said in a statement. ?However, in the long run, by acquiring a second designated player slot as well as a third-round draft pick, it provides us the opportunity and mechanisms to improve our team over the next couple of years.?
An initiative announced by MLS? Board of Governors on Nov. 11, the Designated Player Rule ? designed to help attract high-profile players into the league ? allows each team to sign one player whose salary will fall outside of the team salary budget and whose cost above the salary budget charge will be the financial responsibility of the club. A Designated Player?s salary will count $400,000 toward the team?s salary budget ? an amount to be paid by the league. The club will pay for any amount over $400,000. Each team started out with one tradable Designated Player slot.
After the trade, the Red Bulls have the MLS-mandated maximum of two designated player slots, with the second one counting $325,000 towards the team?s salary budget.
Guevara, the 2004 MLS MVP, was named team MVP in 2006, scoring eight goals and five assists.
After joining New York in 2003 from Honduran club CD Motagua, Guevara made a total of 103 regular-season appearances, including 100 starts, over four seasons.

Soccer House cleaning list since NYRed Bulls Sporting Director Bruce Arena took over

House cleaning list since NYRed Bulls Sporting Director Bruce Arena took over
THE HOUSE CLEANING LIST:Who's come and gone under Arena
The post season, especially the two weeks, has been quite a busy one for New York Red Bulls coach and sporting director Bruce Arena.
Eight players already have left the team since the end of the season, with certainly more to come.
Here's a quick look on how Arena's broom has begun to sweep out the Red Bulls:
Oct. 29
An injured midfielder-forward Youri Djorkaeff watches his final pro game from the bench as the Red Bulls are eliminated from the playoffs in a 1-1 draw at D.C. United.
Nov. 17
Midfielder Danny O'Rourke is chosen by Toronto F.C. in the expansion draft.
Nov. 22
Four players are waived by the club -- goalkeeper Tony Meola, defenders Steve Jolley and Peter Canero and midfielder Chris Henderson.
Forward Edson Buddle is traded to Toronto for former MetroStars defender Tim Regan, while the club signs defender Eric Denton.
Nov. 27
Veteran midfielder and team captain Amado Guevara is traded to Chivas USA for a designated player spot and a third-round selection in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft.

Soccer Bruce Arena: "Its a Big Gamble" to trade Amado Guevara

?IT?S A BIG GAMBLE? But Arena feels he will find the right players to rebuild Bulls after dealing Guevara to Chivas
Amado Guevara, celebrating his late equalizing goal against Chicago in 2005, played three of his four seasons here in a MetroStars uniform.
Admitting trading midfielder and team captain Amado Guevara was a gamble, New York Red Bulls coach and sporting director Bruce Arena Monday said he was confident he could find players to improve the MLS club.
The dealing of arguably the best player in the history of the MetroStars and Red Bulls to Chivas USA gave the team a second designated player slot in which the team can acquire another international player higher than the league maximum salary of $280,000.
Arena felt he had no choice to trade the 2004 MLS MVP if he wanted to improve a team that has advanced out of the first round of the playoffs only once in 11 years. The Red Bulls (9-11-12) were eliminated in the opening round this season.
"If you look at our roster, there haven't been too many desirable players that anyone else has been interested in," he said during a conference call. ?We had to let go arguably our best player.
"It's a big gamble making a move like this, giving up a proven player in the league."
He later added: ?I think we?re going to get the right players.?
Under new rules passed by the league earlier this month, each team is allowed one designated player with a max of $400,000 under the salary cap, which is expected to be increased from $1.9 million to about $2.3 million next season. The second DP would count $325,000 toward the cap. Salary more than the league maximum would have to be picked up by the Red Bulls themselves.
The trade further fueled speculation that Brazilian forward Ronaldo and Portuguese midfielder Luis Figo would eventually join the club. There also have been ongoing talks between the representatives of former U.S. National Team captain Claudio Reyna and the league, the Springfield, N.J. native's agent, Lyle Yorks reportedly said.
Arena wouldn't address any potential new player specifically.
"I'm like a little kid making his Christmas list for mom and dad," Arena said. "Some of the requests are unreasonable. . . . At this point of time, we're not closing the door on anyone. However, my guess is we're not going to get Ronaldinho.
"In all honesty, it doesn't have to be a big-name player. It has to be a good player. And you know the market place around the world, players are very expensive so some are certainly going to be cost-prohibitive. As we go through the process, we?re going to have to sort that out."
But the New York market likes big-name players.
If the Red Bulls don't improve, Arena realized where the player would fall.
"At the end of the day, whatever players are chosen, it's my responsibility," he said. "When coaches are fired, you don't see the president of clubs or federations accepting the blame, they point the finger."
Since the end of the season, eight players have been cut or traded.
"There's a lot of work to do on this roster," Arena said. "There's been some huge holes left on this roster. There were major issues on salary and everything else that handcuffed this organization and myself on being able to acquire other players."
Arena indicated that some of the players he released last week -- such as veteran goalkeeper Tony Meola -- could return to the club with lower salaries. Midfielder Chris Henderson and defenders Steve Jolley and Peter Canero also were waived.
"We have time to sign these players," he said.
Arena said most of those players were cut due to salary and age.
"We have to get our team a little younger and we have to have a little more flexibility in the salary cap," he said.
Guevara, 30, will be re-united with Chivas coach Bob Bradley, who brought him to the Metros in 2003. Guevara had his best years under Bradley.
"I like Amado a lot," Arena said. "Personally, I like him as a player. I wanted to do something that I felt was going to eventually be comfortable for him and I think that Chivas, a team with a great Hispanic following, was good for him. Secondly, I was confident that Bob would be a good coach for Amado. As much as we need to make moves that make sense for our team, there?s a personal side to it as well. I felt that this would be a great opportunity for him."

Soccer OFFSIDE REMARKS/Comment or Opinion's about the Trade

OFFSIDE REMARKS/Comment or Opinion's about the Trade
Some thoughts on wasted deals, Guevara trade
Some thoughts after the dust settled on the Red Bulls' wheeling and dealing over the past week:
Nothing for nothing
When you think about it, it's pretty incredible, sad and pathetic that the Red Bulls let three young prospects go for nothing in return or virtually nothing.
I'm talking about midfielders Michael Bradley (turned 19 on July 31) and Eddie Gaven (turned 20 on Oct. 25), defender Tim Ward (turns 20 on Feb. 28)
It isn't the present regime's fault, but the blame falls under the Alexi Lalas-Mo Johnston reign of error last winter.
Last winter, they allowed Bradley to join Heerenveen for a small transfer fee. He is thriving at the Dutch First Division club these days. Remember, the league got the transfer fee, not the team.
Last December they traded Ward to Columbus for veteran midfielder Chris Henderson, who was waived by the team last week.
Only days prior to the season opener, the Red Bulls dealt Gaven to the Columbus Crew for forward Edson Buddle, who was a bust (six goals) this season.
Last week the club sent Buddle to expansion Toronto F.C. and to Johnston for defender Tim Regan, who was cut by the Red Bulls, when they were known as the MetroStars, last February.
All told, nothing for virtually nothing.
What a waste.
When Red Bulls coach and sporting director Bruce Arena says he wants to make his team younger, he can only look over his shoulder at what his predecessors had wrought.
What a waste.
The Guevara deal
Yours truly has mixed emotions over Amado Guevara's departure.
He could be the best player in the league or his and his team?s worst enemy.
The Honduran international could rise to the occasion with a brilliant 53-yard pass to John Wolyniec, who volleyed in a spectacular game-winning goal in 2003 or firing home a free-kick to salvage a tie in the waning minutes against the Chicago Fire in 2005.
Or sometimes he could fall victim to his mercurial temperament, getting yellow cards for arguing with referees that ultimately resulted in suspensions in key late season matches.
But like any coach in the league or in the world, for that matter, Arena wants to build the team in his image and his way. I'm not convinced Arena was convinced that Guevara would be the man he wanted to rebuild his team around.
Like I said, he wants his own players.
After inheriting a flawed club, the media gave Arena a pass this past season with yet another early elimination from the playoffs. With his own players next season, there will be more scrutiny on and much higher expectations for the coach.
So, like it or not, it?s another winter of rebuilding. But you shouldn't be surprised. After all, that's been the Modus operandi for a club that has had 10 coaches and no championships (or anything close to one) to show for itself entering its 12th season.
