Haiti hang on to win their opening game against Martinique in Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals
Haiti defend well to produce hard fought one nil victory over Martinique
Posted on January 13, 2007
Friday, January 12, 2007 ? Hasely Crawford Stadium, Trinidad: Haiti opened their Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals tournament with a 1-0 win over the French West Indies side Martinique after a hard fought 90 minutes in the Hasley Crawford stadium.
Haiti opened the brighter of the two sides and with Guillame Stephane and Mones Chery combining well for Haiti posed the greater threat. In fact it was the same two players who combined to set Brunel Fucien through on goal in the 12th minute. The pacey striker was coolness personified when he neatly lifted the ball over the onrushing Martinique keeper Eddie Heurlie and had the easiest of tasks to simply poke home the ball into an empty net.
Haiti showed real purpose as they did not sit on their lead and took the game to Martinique. They were unfortunate again in fact in the 38th minute when captain Richard Bruny saw his well timed shot fly past the wrong side of the post.
Martinique showed more purpose and intent in the second half and came close to the elusive equalizer on 62 minutes when Patrick Percin combined well with Steve Gustan to set up Audrick Linord who went so close with a right footed effort that seemed destined to hit the back of the Haiti net.
Martinique were further aggrieved when their striker Franciano Etinof was brought down by Haitian keeper Fenelon Gabard when straight through on gosl. However referee Courtney Campbell only produce the yellow card for the lucky Haitian.
This was to prove vital as from the ensuing free kick Gabard made a wonderful save from Gustan?s fine effort that forced the Haitian net minder into a fine one handed save.
Try as they might Martinique could simply find no way past a stalwart Haitian defense that simply refused to be broken and in the 92nd minute it took a last minute diving tackle from Haitian captain and Motorola Man of the match Bruny to keep Martinique scoreless amd ensure the Haitian?s go top of the Sedley Joseph group after one days play.
Haiti: Gabard Fenelon, Frantz Gilles, Peter Jermaine, Stephane Guillaume, Fucien Brunel, Eliphene Cadet, Alexandre Boucicaut, Pierre Richard Bruny, Mones Chery, Alain Vubert, Josue Mayard
Martinique: Eddy Heurlie, Patrick Percin, Joan Deluge, Sebastien Lugiery, Gael Germany, Wilfrid Thalien, Jose Goron, Charles Coridon, Franciano Etinon, Steve Gustan, Audrick Linord

Soccer Soca Warriors held in opening Digicel Caribbean Cup finals tie

Soca Warriors held in opening Digicel Caribbean Cup finals tie
Wasted chances enable Bajan Pride to snatch a draw
Posted on January 13, 2007
Friday, January 12, 2007 ? Hasely Crawford Stadium, Trinidad: After a spectacular opening ceremony unveiled the Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals in Trinidad, the homes side kicked off the finals tournament with an extremely entertaining game of football.
In front of around 8,000 noisy home fans Trinidad and Tobago could only manage a draw in their opening match of the 2007 Digicel Caribbean Cup finals. Wim Rijsbergen?s team opened the game strongly, passing the ball well and enjoying the bulk of the possession. Leslie Fitzpatrick and Gary Glasgow were proving particularly effective combining well on the Soca Warriors left flank and it was from a Fitzpatrick corner that Trinidad & Tobago almost opened the scoring, Osei Telesford heading over when it seemed easier to score on 28 minutes. But the crowd didn?t have long to wait before celebrating the first goal of this year?s finals tournament. Again Fitzpatrick was the creator, delivering a free-kick from the left that fell to Glasgow who swiveled to score off the far post on 31 minutes.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Bajan Pride taking the game to the home side. A period of prolonged pressure saw Louie Soares and Neil Harvey go close before Eyre Sealy?s side deservedly drew level on 66 minutes, Harvey meeting a Norman Forde cross with an unstoppable header. The equalizer stung the hosts back into action and the home side created enough chances in the final 20 minutes to have secured the three points but proved unable to convert a series of gilt-edged opportunities. Gary Glasgow was the main culprit, firing wide on 69 and 85 minutes with only Morrison Taylor in the Bajan goal to beat.
Rijsbergen and the home fans will be hoping the host side can be more clinical in front of goal in their second group game with Martinique on 16th September while the Bajan Pride will be satisfied to keep their unbeaten record in the tournament intact.
Trinidad & Tobago: Jan Michael Williams, Dwayne Jack, Osei Telesford, Leslie Fitzpatrick (Kwame Wiltshire), Scott Sealy (Darryl Roberts), Kerwin Jemmott (Kwame Wiltshire), Gary Glasgow, Kerry Baptiste, Nigel Daniel, Denzil Theobald.
Barbados: Morrison Taylor, Jonathan Straker, Gregory Goodridge, Louie Soares, John Hawkesworth, Neil Harvey (Rushida Williams), John Parris, Ryan Lucas (Sheridan Groversnor), Norman Forde, Dyson James, Romelle Burgess

Warriors held 1-1 by Bajans

Warriors held 1-1 by Bajans
Saturday, January 13 2007
BARBADIAN midfielder Neil Harvey cancelled out Gary Glasgow?s opener for Trinidad and Tobago as the opening match of the 2007 Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals ended in a 1-1 draw last night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.
Haiti and Martinique were scheduled to play in the other match of the evening?s double-header in the Sedley Joseph Group.
Trinidad and Tobago fielded a line-up which, led by Densil Theobald included left-footed midfielders Leslie ?Tiger? Fitzpatrick and Kerwyn ?Hardest? Jemmott, both returning to the fold for the first time in over a year, and debutants Seon Power and Osei Telesford.
Telesford, partnering Dwayne Jack in the center of the TT defence, fitted nicely into the scheme of things while Fitzpatrick, sporting a slimmer look, tested the Bajans with testing runs on both flanks.
It was the trio of Jemmott, Gary Glasgow and Scott Sealy who created the first meaningful chance for the hosts, as Sealy was sent clear by Jemmott on a 11th minute counter-attack, but Sealy?s left-footer was blocked by a defender.
Jemmott again was in the thick of things, in the 18th, as he fed Kerry Baptiste on the right, and the diminutive midfielder saw his powerful left-footer deflected wide.
On the half-hour mark, Fitzpatrick?s right-side corner was not held by Barbados? goalkeeper Adrian Chase, and Telesford was unable to keep his header down on the far post.
But a set piece will prove crucial for Trinidad and Tobago, two minutes later, when Fitzpatrick, on the left, floated a free-kick which was not cleared by the Bajan defence, and Glasgow spun and shot his left-footer past Chase.
Barbados did not lie down and die, and they started the second half with a lot of passion and purpose, especially in midfield as Sealy and Jemmott were tiring.
Sealy headed Baptiste?s 55th minute cross onto the crossbar but the visitors got a deserved equaliser when, from a short corner by captain Norman Forde, Grogory Goodridge sent a high ball to Harvey, who headed past the flat-footed TT defence.
Sealy, Fitzpatrick and Jemmott were later replaced by the youthful trio of Darryl Roberts, Kwame Wiltshire and Keeron Benito but they could not make a positive impression on the match, to the dismay of the crowd estimated at 10,000.
After Glasgow got a fantastic pass from Jemmott in the 70th, he could only look on in horror as an unmarked Roberts, with his first touch of the game, placed his left-footer wide from 10 metres out while Glasgow collected a ball from Theobald but missed his 86th minute effort.
Not even a man advantage for the hosts, when John Hawkesworth was sent off by Panamanian referee Roberto Moreno for his second bookable offence, could tilt the balance in TT?s favour.
TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO: Jan-Michael Williams; Dwayne Jack, Osei Telesford, Nigel Daniel, Seon Power; Densil Theobald (capt), Leslie Fitzpatrick (Kwame Wiltshire 72nd), Kerry Baptiste, Kerwyn Jemmott (Keeron Benito 82nd); Gary Glasgow, Scott Sealy (Darryl Roberts 69th).
BARBADOS: Adrian Chase; John Parris, Dyson James, Jonathan Straker, John Hawkesworth, Grogory Goodridge; Romelle Burgess, Norman Forde (capt), Louie Soares (Ramuel Miller 90th), Neil Harvey (Rushida Williams 74th); Ryan Lucas (Sheridan Grovesnor 79th).

Soccer Barbados hold Soca Warriors in Digicel Cup

Barbados hold Soca Warriors in Digicel Cup
Saturday, January 13th 2007
Trinidad and Tobago striker and goalscorer Gary Gasglow, left, strives for control of the ball under pressure from Barbados defender Jonathan Straker during last evening's Digicel Cup opener at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. The game was drawn 1-1. See Page 78.
Trinidad and Tobago's young footballers showed glimpses of promise, but wasted several good chances as they opened their campaign in the Digicel Caribbean Cup with a 1-1 draw against Barbados yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Coach Wim Rijsbergen's bunch is a work still in progress.
For the first 45 minutes, the young Soca Warriors looked a better unit than Barbados. But having taken a 1-0 lead at the half, Trinidad and Tobago gave the Bajans a point they did not deserve.
Rijbergen, though, will not just be concerned about the lost ground, but that some of his stalwarts, failed, especially in the second half.
Skipper Denzil Theobald had World Cup experience but failed to lift his standard above mediocre for most of the second half, while Gary Glasgow scored one, but missed many equally simple chances to score.
Barbados started cautiously, playing behind the ball, and showing much respect, even for an inexperienced T&T squad.
Early on, there was smooth movement in the T&T midfield. Theobald and Kerwin Jemmott manned the centre, while Kerry Baptiste (Right) and Leslie "Tiger" Fitzpatrick (left) held the wide positions. Gary Glasgow and
Scott Sealy looked a solid enough tandem in attack, but neither produced on the night. Where the new-look
Trinidad and Tobago team looked shaky was at the back where Tobago United's Dwayne Jack, Seon Power and Osei Telesford and Nigel Daniel were struggling to look a solid unit.
Glasgow eventually gave T&T the lead when he picked up a loose ball and scrambled it into the Barbados net in the 32nd minute.
Barbados took 36 minutes to get their first shot at the Trinidad & Tobago goal and even so, the effort was well held by T&T keeper Jan Michael Williams.T&T chances were bound to sting T&T at some point and striker Neil Harvey did just that when he pulled Barbados level in the 67th minute when getting a free header from Gregory Goodridge's corner kick.
But even so, T&T had enough chances in the final 20 minutes to come away comfortable winners. Newcomer Darryl Roberts made his T&T debut in the 70th minute as a substitute and his inexperience let him down immediately. Put through by a bouncing ball from Glasgow, Roberts had the Barbados goal at his mercy, but lost composure and stabbed at the ball, turning his shot wide.
It was that kind of night.

Haiti: Gabard Fenelon, Frantz Gilles, Peter Jermaine, Stephane Guillaume, Fucien Brunel, Eliphene Cadet, Alexandre Boucicaut, Pierre Richard Bruny, Mones Chery, Alain Vubert, Josue Mayard
Martinique: Eddy Heurlie, Patrick Percin, Joan Deluge, Sebastien Lugiery, Gael Germany, Wilfrid Thalien, Jose Goron, Charles Coridon, Franciano Etinon, Steve Gustan, Audrick Linord
