Soccer Football/Soccer - Haiti defeat Barbados to qualify for semi finals of Digicel Caribbean Cup

Haiti defeat Barbados to qualify for semi finals of Digicel Caribbean Cup
01-16-2007
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Haiti may have taken the longest route possible to get to the Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals but they were the first team to qualify for the semi finals when they defeated Barbados by one goal to nil in the home of the Soca warriors.
Haiti, with only one change to their team from the opening game where they picked up maximum points against Martinique, knew that a win here would qualify them for the semi final stages.
This knowledge seemed to spur them on and from the kick-off they looked to take the game to Barbados.
With Captain Richard Bruny in fine form down the centre of the pitch and wingers Fucien Brunel and Stephane Guillaume looking to take on their respective full backs at every opportunity, the Haitians seemed to want to take the early initiative.
Indeed it took some good goalkeeping by the Barbudian netminder Morrison Taylor to keep the Haitians scoreless when Bruny first played the pacey Alexandre Boucicaut through, only for the lightning quick striker to be denied by the feet of Taylor, with only the keeper to beat on 13 minutes.
The second obvious save from Taylor came on 32 minutes when the influential Haitian captain Bruny had his thunderous 30 yard free kick beaten away by the fists of Taylor.
Barbados were not to be outdone and began to show a bit more constructive industry in their attacks going forward. First Parris and Williams combined well but had their play break down due to poor offensive movement from a lackluster Barbudian front line.
Haiti came out in the second half and were keen to pick up where they left off. On 54 minutes in an almost exact replica of their opening chance they finally took the lead.
Barbados had pushed up to try and limit the space that Bruny was relishing in the midfield only to leave a large space behind the back four. The clever Bruny was aware of this and from his through ball, the speed of Alexandre Boucicaut again left him well clear of the defence and through one on one on Taylor in the Barbados goal. This time the centre forward was coolness personified and simply passed the ball past Taylor and into the net to bring Haiti to a deserved one goal lead
However, as with Friday night?s opening game, Barbados showed their composure at the back and the apparent detail that coach Eyre Sealy had drilled into their organizational ability at the back.
Haiti wanted to test this resolve and pushed for the security of a second goal. Substitute Fritzson Baptiste caused trouble throughout and on 72 minutes his well positioned cross fell nicely to Eliphene Cadet who was unfortunate to see his well placed volley pushed away by Barbados keeper Taylor.
Haiti eventually did find their way past Taylor for a second time when on 91 minutes substitute Roody Lormera beat the offside trap and raced through to place the ball between Taylor?s legs when faced with a one on one situation.
Not much could stop Haiti going through at this point, and even when the floodlights failed for 10 minutes before engineers resolved the issue, this did not prevent the Haitians from having their day.
Barbados : Morrison Taylor, Jonathan Straker, Gregory Goodridge, Renaldo Fenty, Neil Harvey (Ryan Lucas 45?), John Parris, Rushida Williams, Norman Forde, Dyson James, Sheridan Groversnor, Romelle Burgess (Ramuel Miller 77?)
Haiti: Gabard Fenelon, Peter Jermaine (Fritzson Baptiste 32?), Stephane Guillaume, Fucien Brunel, Eliphene Cadet (Roody Lormera 80?), Alexandre Boucicaut, Richard Pierre Bruny, Ednerson Raymond, Mones Chery, Alain Vubert, Josue Mayard (James Marcelin 64?)

Soccer Haiti reaches Carib Cup semis

Haiti reaches Carib Cup semis
Monday, January 15, 2007
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad
Haiti secured a semifinal spot by beating Barbados 2-0 and host Trinidad and Tobago thrashed 10-man Martinique 5-1 in Caribbean Cup soccer on Monday.
Haiti, the last nation to qualify via a repechage round, was the first to make the last four.
Haiti remained top of the Sedley Joseph Group, and Trinidad second, and they're set to meet in the last group round on Wednesday.
Captain Richard Bruny's pass in behind the Barbados defense released Alexandre Boucicaut, who beat goalkeeper Morrison Taylor in a one-on-one to give Haiti the lead in the 54th minute.
Roody Lormera took advantage of Gregory Goodridge's defensive mistake to double the lead in injury time.
Trinidad made a perfect start against Martinique when Darryl Roberts headed in a third-minute Denzil Theobald free kick.
Martinique leveled in the 17th through Xavier Bullet but the disputed sending off of Joan Deluge in the 31st handed the advantage back to Trinidad.
Deluge was adjudged to have handled a Roberts shot on the line. Gary Glasgow missed the penalty attempt but the host went ahead five minutes later when Kerry Baptiste netted.
Glasgow made amends for his penalty miss when he headed home a Leslie Fitzpatrick cross in the 47th.
Baptiste's and Glasgow's seconds goals finished off Martinique

Soccer Trinidad and Tobago show World Cup form in seeing off Martinique

Trinidad and Tobago show World Cup form in seeing off Martinique
01-16-2007
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Trinidad and Tobago showed why they are the perceived the no 1 team in the Caribbean when they produced a professional display to defeat Martinique 5-1 in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Group Sedely Joseph in the Hasely Crawford stadium.
Trinidad and Tobago had a dream start. As if wanting to prove the result on Friday in the opening game of the Finals tournament was not truly representative of their nation, they started at a ferocious pace and were ahead on 3 minutes.
After some good work by Gary Glasgow produced a free kick on the right of the 18 yard box, Trini captain Denzil Theobald?s inch perfect delivery was met beautifully at the back post by Daryl Roberts whose bullet header was too much for Eddy Heurlie in the Martinique goal.
Martinique was quick to respond and one minute later should have been on level terms when a fine run and cross by Xavier Bullet pressured soca warrior keeper Williams to simply palm the ball into the path of Steve Gustan.
Gustan should have scored but seemed to panic with the goal at his mercy and couldn?t dig the ball out from under his feet.
On 12 minutes Martinique keeper Eddie Heurlie had a lucky escape when his intended clearance from outside his 6 yard box fell kindly to Darryl Roberts whose effort clipped the top of the crossbar to the relief of Heurlie who was sprinting back to his goal.
4 minutes later on 16 and Martinique were level. Patrick Percin released Xavier Bullet inside the Trinidad defence and his first touch allowed the French West Indies striker to glide past the full back before he coolly clipped the ball past the on rushing Williams to make it 1 each.
Trinidad and Tobago responded positively and came right back at Martinique. On 30 minutes they had the chance they wanted when they were awarded a penalty which saw Martinique?s Joan Deluge receive a red card for handling the ball on the line after Roberts shot was destined to cross the goal line.
Unfortunately for the home fans, goal hero from Friday night Gary Glasgow saw his tame effort from the penalty spot smothered by Martinique keeper Heurlie.
With a one man advantage Trinidad did not have long to wait before they did eventually take the lead on 36 minutes. After a good run and cross by Kerwin Jemmott found Glasgow whose initial attempt was parried well by keeper Heurlie, Darryl Roberts found himself with the goal at his mercy.
After Roberts? shot was stopped on the line by a Martinique defender the opportunity fell to Kerry Baptiste who made no mistake from 3 yards.
Trinidad looked home and dry on 47 minutes when they took a 2 goal advantage.
A fantastic left hand cross by the talented left foot of Leslie Fitzpatrick was met by the powerful head of Gary Glasgow who leaped like a salmon and out sprung his marker to make up for his earlier penalty miss.
On 75 minutes T&T had another penalty. After a long punt up field from keeper Williams was well controlled by Glasgow, his turn and pass released substitute Joel Bailey whose strong frame was hauled to the ground by Martinique defender.
On this occasion responsibility fell to Kerry Baptiste who did not fail where Glasgow did earlier and made it 4-1 in favor of Trinidad when he sent Heurlie the wrong way with his clever spot kick.
If there was any doubt of this result Gary Glasgow made sure of it on 83 minutes when he spun and converted from 6 yards out after another good cross by left winger Leslie Fitzpatrick.
Trinidad and Tobago: Jan Michael Williams, Dwayne Jack, Osei Telesford, Leslie Fitzpatrick, Kerwin Jemmot (Hayden Tinto 66?), Darryl Roberts (Joel Bailey 60?), Gary Glasgow, Kerry Baptiste, Seon Power (Makan Hislop 79?), Nigel Daniel, Denzil Theobold
Martinique: Eddy Heurlie, Patrick Percin, Joan Deluge, Wilfrid Thalien, Jose Goron (Sebastien Lugoery 77?), Daniel Herelle, Willy Padoly, Jean Victor Lavril (Charles Corridon 45?), Xavier Bullet (Johan Clementia 58?), Steve Gustan, Audrick Linord
