Haiti beat Guadeloupe to qualify for the Digicel Caribbean Cup Final
Haiti deservedly win through to final Digicel Caribbean Cup game
Posted on January 20, 2007
Saturday, January 20, 2007 ? Hasely Crawford Stadium, Trinidad: Haiti, who have played more games than other country in this years Digicel Caribbean Cup are now so close to the end of their journey as they qualified to meet the winners of the Trinidad and Tobago vs Cuba game in the Digicel Caribbean Cup final on Tuesday next January 23rd.
Haiti, who have kept a virtually unchanged team throughout the finals, started impressively and took the game to Guadeloupe early. Indeed the French West Indies side had net minder Fabrice Mercury, their usual replacement keeper, to thank for keeping the score level.
Alexandre Boucicaut showed why he is so highly rated at the moment as his incisive runs and movement was proving to be more than a headache for the Guadeloupe defense.
Fucien Brunel and Raymond Ednerson on the wings were tearing their respective full backs apart as time and time again in the first half they seemed to cut by them producing tantalizing crosses which were simply not been taken advantage of by the Haitians.
On 31 minutes the best chance of the game was created when again Ednerson cut down the left and cut the ball across goal for the onrushing Boucicaut, who somehow managed to put his shot wide form 7 yards out and the goal at his mercy.
4 minutes later and Mercury was finally beaten. The post on this occasion was the savior for Guadeloupe. Eliphene Cadet picked up the ball with his back to goal, spun and shot. The diving Mercury was relieved as the ball came off the inside of his right post and rolled harmlessly across his unguarded net.
It was not until the 42nd minute when Guadeloupe laid their first attack on the Haitian goal. After Raddas? corner kick was only half cleared, the waiting Dominique Mocka had a left footed drive from the edge of the box just clear the bar of Fenelon Gabard?s goal.
Right on half time Haiti again had the opportunity to open the scoring. Fucien Brunel was through on goal, cutting in from the right, and just as he was about to pull the trigger full back Onesta Marving recovered well for Guadeloupe with a magnificent last ditch sliding tackle to deny the Haitian.
The opening of the second half continued in the same vein and Haiti were finally rewarded on 56 minutes with the opening goal which their play so richly deserved.
Fucien Brunel made another incisive run and cross from the right and on this occasion Eliphene Cadet, who was virtually on the penalty spot, met it with a glorious looping header which just reached over the fingertips of the despairing Mercury in the Guadeloupe goal.
4 minutes later and Brunel thought he had made it 2-0 but his shot over the dive of Mercury in the Guadeloupe goal when through in a one on one situation rebounded off the post.
Brunel was not to be outdone however and on 66 minutes he got Haiti?s second. A quick free kick released Chery Mones whose cut back across the face of goal was stabbed home by Brunel who showed his joy with a well earned exuberant celebration.
Haiti made sure of the game on 76 minutes when a beautiful interpassage of play saw Eliphene combine with Chery Mones who cut the ball across the face of goal when confronted by the French West Indies keeper for substitute Fritzson Baptiste to have the simplest of tasks by knocking the ball into the empty net from 6 yards.
Frtizson Baptiste was so close to making it embarrassing for Guadeloupe as on 81 minutes he rounded Mercury but from a tight angle could only manage to hit the Guadeloupe post.
One minute later on 83 and Guadeloupe replied. A fine cross from the right found Lean Luc Lambourde whose header back across goal looped over everyone and into the back of the Haitian net to make it 3-1 and add more respectability to the score line.
That is the way the score remained and Haiti now go into the Digicel Caribbean Cup Final which is set for January 23 in the Hasely Crawford stadium in Port of Spain and await either Trinidad and Tobago or Cuba.
Guadeloupe: Fabrice Mercury, Onesta Marving Mickael Laurent, Alain Vertot, Dominique Mocka (Constant Theresine 78?), Fabien Raddas (Gerald Gavarin 74?) Jocelyn Angloma, Jean-Luc Lamourde, Lerry Hanany (Wilfrid Loiseau 52?), Cedric Vanoukia
Haiti: Gabard Fenelon, Frantz Gilles, Peter Germaine, Stephane Guillaume, Fucien Brunel (Baptiste Fritzson 71?), Eliphene Cadet, Alexandre Boucicaut (James Marcelin 66?), Richard Pierre Bruny, Raymond Ednerson (Chery Mones 42?), Alain Vubert, Josue Maynard

Soccer Haiti outclass Guadeloupe

Haiti outclass Guadeloupe
Sunday, January 21st 2007
AFTER resting half of their starters against Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti's footballers dominated Guadeloupe from the opening whistle to come away comfortable 3-1 winners of the first of the Digicel Caribbean Cup semi-finals yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Having also struck the Guadeloupe upright on three occasions, Haiti look a formidable opponent for whichever team they meet in the final on Tuesday.
Guadeloupe, missing Sheffield United defender David Sommeil from their line-up, were  pinned back for most of the first half. Haiti should have had at least a one-goal lead at the half and were given an excellent opportunity on the half hour through Alexandre Boucicat. As he bore down on Raymond Ednerson 's low cross at the back post, many thought Boucicat had scored, but instead he turned his shot inches wide. Scrambling to cover his far post, goalkeeper Fabrice Mercury had little chance had the shot been on target.Â
Even before then, Haiti were wasting their chances. Lerry Hanay, a defensive midfielder, overlapped and met the ball with a good header that looked a sure goal, until a good save from keeper Mercury in the 14th minute.
Ten minutes later, centre-forward Eliphene Cadet looked a clearly frustrated man when Boucicat broke clear up the right, but instead of finding his teammate, forced an angled shot which the Guadeloupe keeper tipped wide.
Haiti's Raymond Ednerson did the same up the opposite flank minutes later, when scooping the ball over the Guadeloupe goal. Cadet also struck the post in the 36th when collecting Fucien Brunel's pass atop the six-yeard box and hitting a curling left-footer away from the dive of beaten keeper Mercury.
Guadeloupe's chances were few and far between, but striker Fabien Raddas got closest with a fierce shot on goal, which Haiti keeper Gabard Fenelon treated with disdain. First he parried the ball, then took it on his chest.
Haiti finally took the lead in the 55th through Cadet's looping header into Guadeloupe's goal, and doubled their tally at 2-0 in the 64th with Brunel's close-up finish to Money Chery's right crossball.
Between goals, the Haitian keeper saw rare action when making a double save,  first at the feet of  striker Fabien Raddas and then plucking down Wilfrid Louseau's follow up.
Haiti's Brunel also struck the Guadeloupe post in the 60th minute after outpacing the Guadeloupe defence. But that miss mattered little when Fritzon Baptiste finished a brilliant move in the 77th minute to put Haiti into a 3-0 lead.
The build-up saw Man of the Match Cadet play a diagonal pass inside the left back to Chery, who squared the ball to centre-field  for Baptiste to bundle into the Guadeloupe goal.
Afterwards, Haiti's Baptiste rounded keeper Mercury and struck Guadeloupe's upright, before Guadeloupe got a late consolation goal.
But, by the time big midfielder Jean LucLamourde planted a header past the Haitian keeper in the a 83rd minute, Guadeloupe were already well-beaten.
Trinidad and Tobago were playing Cuba in the second semi-final after press-time last night.

Soccer The day cricket, football won

The day cricket, football won
Sunday, January 21 2007
What a tremendous sporting day it was! Trinidad and Tobago hosted two major international (sceptics will say ?regional?) sporting events last Wednesday, and went on to win them both handsomely.
First, let us settle the geography: We played the sovereign nation Guyana, in cricket at the Queen?s Park Oval during the day, and then met another sovereign nation, Haiti, at football in the Hasely Crawford Stadium in the evening.
While both these countries are in our geographic ?region?, they are full members of the world community. We all know that a football match between, say, England and Scotland is a full international, but our old colonial mindset prevents us from accepting that football between us and Haiti is an international match. We consider it to be something less ? a regional event.
A few years ago we would have argued that we could not promote two sporting events on the same day. The fans were ?shared? fans, and it would be unfair to force a choice of which event to support upon them.
While there is some truth to this ?shared fan? opinion, as there is a core of ?sports supporters? out there, the cricket and football spectator markets are reasonably diverse.
In any case, with the cricket ending around 5 pm, and the TT vs Haiti match kicking off at 7.15, less than a mile (but a long way in ?time? given our traffic problems) away, dedicated fans could take in both events.
How many of you supported both the cricket and the football? I really would like to know. You deserve the Title: Sports Supporter of TT.
And the support for both events was good, judging from crowd turnout. The cricket authorities opened the gates at the Oval, waiving admission charges, in order to encourage as many people as possible to come to the match.
The reason being that they wanted to test the security and crowd-control systems leading up to the Cricket World Cup in March.
A fair crowd seemed to have taken advantage of the opportunity, judging from what I saw on the news, and no doubt, the Local Organising Committee will have told us how the systems worked by the time you read this. The neighbourhood will also have made their comments on the restrictions put in place for traffic and security.
However, it was the thrill of the game, TT against Guyana, and the triumph of our cricketers, that was really impressive. I could not be there being on the Organising Committee for the football.
But I did see the highlights, and was especially pleased with the return of Ravi Rampaul, and the success of young Kieron Pollard. I look forward to seeing him live in the middle one day soon.
For the Guyanese, it has been a special week here for them as well. Their national cricket and football teams are both here in Trinidad, the footballers playing in the Digicel Caribbean Cup Finals.
The cricket team has been coming to support Guyana at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, and for a small group, they do manage to create considerable fan support for their footballers, something small groups of Trinis are unwilling to do for our teams.
But, back at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, TT?s young football team has been rising with each match they play. Starting the Finals with a 1-1 draw with scrappy Barbados the previous week, they then defeated a strong Martinique squad on Monday 5-1, before closing out the Preliminary Round with a 3-1 result against Haiti. This performance belied the harping critics who felt that our Warriors lacked the experience and cohesiveness to do well in this tournament.
Do we remember how we struggled in the 2005 version of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Barbados? I am certainly pleased with the performance of this new squad, for even when goals were missed, or passes went astray.
The tactics were clear, and the commitment was total. We are now in the semi-finals, and have therefore qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States in June.
For those of you who are already claiming that this young team is ?wasting their time?, because the overseas-based players will be available for the Gold Cup, I have this to say: No overseas-based player is currently on the squad. And the attitude of every team member on the current Digicel Caribbean Cup squad is: ?I expect some overseas based to have a place on the team, but not my place!?
And that is the attitude that really builds powerful teams. Every overseas-based player knows that they have to earn their place on the Gold Cup squad, and that is good for the future of our football.
As you read this, the semi-finals of the Digicel Caribbean Cup were already played last night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Trinidad and Tobago played Cuba in the feature match-up while French speaking nations Haiti and Guadeloupe clashed in the other semi-final.
That south Trinidad-based group has been tighter and more competitive than the Sedley Joseph Group played in the north.
This Digicel Caribbean Cup has been a tremendous success so far. Do not miss the championships match on Tuesday evening.
