Haiti wins 2007 Caribbean Digicel Soccer Champion: Haiti 2-1 victory over Trinidad

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad
Videos of the Goals included
Haiti won the Caribbean Cup by defeating Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 in Tuesday's soccer final, and Cuba claimed third place after downing Guadeloupe 2-1.
First-time winner Haiti, contesting only its second final in the Cup's 18-year history, emerged triumphant after a competition lasting 73 matches and involving 25 teams.
Eight-time winner Trinidad, fielding a fledgling side because of club commitments for many star players, fell behind in the 22nd minute when Alexandre Boucicaut scored off a rebound.
The strength and pace of Eliphene Cadet took him round the Trinidad defense on the right flank, and his cross found Fucien Brunel, whose shot was saved by Jan Michael Williams but Boucicaut followed up.
Brunel profited from confusion in the penalty area to double the advantage in the 51st. He tapped into an open goal shortly after keeper Williams spilled another shot, and silenced the 18,000-strong Hasely Crawford Stadium crowd.
Nigel Daniel gave the home side hope when he struck a curling free kick into the left corner of Gabard Fenelon's goal in the 65th. But the host couldn't make a sustained period of late pressure count.
In the match for third, an Alain Cervantes double was enough to secure Cuba the honor. Cervantes curled in a glorious opener after 23 minutes and got his second with a close-range finish in the 48th.
Guadeloupe substitute Fabien Raddas scored in the 52nd.
All four teams qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the U.S. in June.

Soccer Haiti beat Trinidad 2-1 to win Digicel Caribbean Cup

Haiti beat Trinidad 2-1 to win Digicel Caribbean Cup
01-24-2007
PORT OF SPAIN , Trinidad: After the toughest route to the final, playing more qualification games than any other team, Haiti lifted the Digicel Caribbean Cup after defeating Trinidad & Tobago 2-1 in a thrilling final.
Watched by an expectant crowd of 18,000, Wim Rjisbergen?s Soca Warriors could not break down a stubborn Haitian defence, expertly marshaled by Digicel Man of the Match Richard Pierre Bruny, as Luis Amelia Garcia?s side took their chances to bring the Digicel Caribbean Cup back to Port-au-Prince for the very first time.
A cagey opening 20 minutes saw few chances created before the game burst into life on 21 minutes when the Haitians silenced the noisy home crowd by opening the scoring.
Cadet Elphine made a surging run down the right before squaring the ball for Brunel Fucien. Fucien?s first time shot was pushed away by Williams in the Trinidad & Tobago goal but Boucicaut Alexandre was on hand to turn the ball home.
Trinidad struggled to come back into the game but showed their first real threat in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Kerry Baptiste fired just wide 1 minute into stoppage time and Kerwin Jemmott came even closer seconds later, Gabard in the Haiti goal blocking his long range shot.
But Rjisbergen?s side couldn?t keep their momentum after the break and on 52 minutes Haiti seemed to have one hand on the Digicel Caribbean Cup. A goalmouth scramble resulted from a Williams? fumble and Brunel Fucien turned the ball home to give the Haitians a two goal lead.
With the crowd silenced, Haiti seemed comfortably on top but the game changed with a set piece. Trinidad earned a free kick fully 35 yards out on 66 minutes giving Nigel Daniel a sight of goal. Daniel?s vicious right foot strike, a real contender for goal of the tournament, left Gabard with no chance and brought the game alive again.
With the crowd performing an enthusiastic Mexican wave, the Soca Warriors poured forward in search of an equalizer. Substitute Joel Bailey almost found the net on 76 minutes, his header from Power?s long cross well held by Gabard.
As the crowd grew increasingly tense, the Soca Warriors threw 4 up front in the closing minutes and goalkeeper Gabard became the Haitian hero. He denied Glasgow after a flowing move, tipped over a Theobald free kick and then with only 2 minutes left on the clock brilliantly saved from Darryl Roberts after a mazy run.
Despite four nailbiting minutes of stoppage time, Haiti held on for a famous victory which will be celebrated long into the night in Port-au-Prince.
Trinidad and Tobago: Jan Michael Williams, Makan Hislop (Joel Bailey 64), Osei Telesford, Leslie Fitzpatrick ,Kerwin Jemmot, Darryl Roberts, Gary Glasgow, Kerry Baptiste, Seon Power, Nigel Daniel, Densill Theobold
Haiti: Fenelon Gabard, Gilles Frantz (Dacius Gilles 90), Guillaume Stephane, Brunel Fucien, Cadet Eliphene (Lormera Roody 90), Boucicaut Alexandre (Raymond Ednerson 63), James Marcelin, Richard Pierre Bruny, Chery Mones, Vubert Alain, Maynard Josue

Soccer Cuba beat Guadeloupe 2-1 to clinch third place in Digicel Caribbean Cup

Cuba beat Guadeloupe 2-1 to clinch third place in Digicel Caribbean Cup
01-24-2007
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Cuba clinched third place in the 2006/7 Digicel Caribbean Cup and US$50,000 prize money after a 2-1 win over Guadeloupe that was more convincing than the scoreline suggests.
With both teams making a number of changes after their semi-final defeats, the game started slowly, both sides seemingly taking time to settle. As the half wore on, Cuba increasingly took control of the game, but despite enjoying the lion?s share of possession, the men from Havana created few scoring opportunities until a moment of individual genius broke the deadlock.
Alain Cervantes collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and took one touch before firing an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner of Mercury?s goal. Despite Ayala and Duarte going close to adding a second, both denied by the impressive Mercury, Cuba went into the break with only one goal to show for their territorial dominance.
Raul Gonzalez Triana?s side didn?t have long to wait to extend their advantage after the break. Geosvanys Ayala was the creator, skipping down the right wing and firing in a shot that Mercury could only parry. Alain Cervantes was first to the loose ball, squeezing home his second from a narrow angle.
But Cuba?s two goal lead was short-lived with another superb piece of individual play bringing the rapidly swelling crowd to its feet. Guadeloupe substitute Fabian Raddas had only been on the pitch 2 minutes when he bent a Beckhamesque free-kick over the wall from 25 yards to reduce the arrears.
But Raddas? wonder strike was to be the only high point in the half for Roger Salnot?s men, with the remainder of the game following the pattern of the first 45 minutes; plenty of Cuban possession but few clear-cut chances.
Despite today?s 2-1 defeat, Guadeloupe can be pleased with their tournament?s work, taking home US$30,000 in prize money and can look forward to competing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the very first time in the USA this coming June. Cuba will also represent the Caribbean in the Gold Cup in June in what will be their 5th appearance in the tournament.
Guadeloupe: Fabrice Mercury, Kevin Delannay, Onesta Marving, Mickael Laurent (Fabien Raddas 51), Constant Theresine (Dominique Mocka 56), Alain Vertot, Bematol Xavier, Gerald Gavarin, Jean-Luc Lamourde (Steve Bizacene 20), Jocelyn Angloma, Cedrick Vanoukia
Cuba: Dany Quintero, Silvio Minoso, Jenier Molina, Jose Clavelo, Ariel Martinez (Enrique Villaurrutia 86), Alain Cervantes, Geosvanys Ayala (Gisbel Morales 75) Jaine Colome, Reysander Fernandez, Pedro Faife, Leonel Duarte (Yordannis Alvarez 81)
