Soccer W Connection win CFU Champions Cup

W Connection win CFU Champions Cup
Tuesday, January 30, 2007
ANDRE PACHECO netted an early goal and fired W Connection to a 1-0 win over San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Champions Cup final at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella on Sunday evening.
Pacheco scored in the 11th minute to place W Connection into the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final play-offs next month, while giving them their third CFU club title.
Jabloteh went into the match minus defender top defender and captain Cyd Gray who was red-carded in the 2-0 win over Baltimore Sportif of Haiti at the same venue on Friday night, and from early on W Connection tested their youthful back-line.
Andre Toussaint, who scored a goal and made the other two in his team?s 3-2 semi-final win over Jamaica?s Harbour View in Friday?s semi-finals, had the first shot on goal in the sixth minute.
But his right footer from 24-yards out just missed dipping under the cross-bar with goalkeeper Brian James, in goal for an injured Daurance Williams, off his line.
Soon after, W Connection scored what turned out to be the only goal of the match even though Jabloteh may have felt undone by the goal, as it came from a swiftly taken free-kick by St Lucian Earl Jean, with Jabloteh defender Nigel Daniel rolling in pain on the ground from a collision right in front of referee Javier Juaregui, from the Netherlands Antilles.
With Jabloteh coach Terry Fenwick deciding to exclude national player Aurtis Whitley from his starting line-up, it meant Trent Noel and Wendell Joseph would have to vacate some of their attacking moves and keep a close eye on Brazilians Ronaldo Viana and Gefferson Goulart, ace attackers for W Connection.
And it was Viana, who helped unlock the Jabloteh defence, as his floated pass from the right flank, fell nicely at the feet of Pacheco, who had time to pick his spot before firing back across the goal past a stranded James for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
W Connection withstood a few nervous moments in the defence late in the match just as they did in the win over Harbour View to add to their CFU Club triumphs of 2001 and 2002. The result was also sweet revenge for a 4-2 penalty-kicks defeat against Jabloteh in the 2003 final after the two-legged final ended 2-2 on aggregate.
On the other-hand it meant another second place finish for Jabloteh, who were also beaten in the 2004 final as they failed to add to the lone CFU Club title in 2003 under Englishman Ricky Hill.
The Stuart Charles-Fevrier coached W Connection will now meet CD Guadalajara of Mexico in the quarter-final round of the CONCACAF Champions? Cup, in a home-and-away series on February 13 and 28.
TEAMS:
W CONNECTION: Jan-Michael Williams, William Oliveira, Elijah Joseph, Ronaldo Viana, Earl Jean (captain), Gefferson Goulart (Hughton Hector 75th), Andre Toussaint (Kern Cupid 81st), Nicholson Thomas, Andrei Pacheco, Devon Drayton.
SAN JUAN JABLOTEH: Brian James (gk), Karlon Murray, Lester Peltier, Trent Noel (captain), Wendell Joseph (Aurtis Whitley 65th), Jason Marcano, Ian Gray, Nigel Daniel (Glenton Wolfe 85th), Anthony Wolfe, Peter Prosper (Elton John 72nd).

Soccer W Connection to face Mexican Club in CONCACAF Championships

W Connection to face Mexican Club in CONCACAF Championships
Tuesday, 30 January 2007
Newly crowned Caribbean Club Champions Vibe CT 105 W Connection will open their 2007 CONCACAF Club Championship campaign against Mexican Club, Chivas in the month of February.
The TT Pro League Club will play the Mexican League winners on a home and away basis with the first match scheduled for the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Trinidad on the February 13, and the away match in Guadalajara, Mexico on the February 28.
W Connection edged local rivals CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 in the final of the Caribbean Club Championship last Sunday to qualify for the CONCACAF Club Championships.
Owner of the Pro League Club, David John Williams confirmed the dates to ?ttproleague.com?, ?The dates are confirmed and we will play Chivas on the 13th of February then we will leave for Mexico on the 15th to prepare for our away match on the 28th.?
?At the moment our players are preparing for these matches. We don?t know much about the Mexican Club, Chivas and are looking to gather as much as we can over the next couple of days,? ended Williams.
W Connection is no newcomer to the CONCACAF tournament and facing Mexican Clubs as this is their third showing in the CONCACAF Club Championships, having played in 2001 when they lost to MLS Club Kansas City 1-0 and 2-1 in the home and away and in 2002 when they fell short against Mexican Club Toluca 3-2 in the away and a 3-3 draw at home.
Coach of the ?Savonnetta Boys? Stuart Charles Fevrier believes his team has a good a chance as the Mexican Club and wasn?t a bit worried when he spoke with ?ttproleague.com?, ?It is always a challenge for us in the Caribbean to play against Central American Clubs. We are very eager for these matches and it?s a challenge we accept. Mexico is already established as one of the football giants of South America but we are not a bit worried and I believe we have an even chance just as Chivas.?
?We have a well organized preparation program over the next couple of weeks. I will even try to get one or two warm-up matches before our first game,? said the St Lucian.
He also believes he will stick to most of his players that played in the semifinals and final of the Caribbean Club Championship, ?Most of our players are fit and ready for these matches. We have a few players who are still recuperating from surgeries like Silvio Spann and Clyde Leon who would not be available for selection.?
?Brazillian Jose Luis Seabra has a chance of making the team once he is match fit. He has been training with the team full time recently after coming off a back injury. He is currently in Brazil with his girlfriend who had a baby boy recently and would join us later this week. So I believe I will stick with the same squad of players that played in the semifinals and final of the Caribbean Club Championship with maybe the introduction of one or two new faces,? ended the W Connection Coach.

Soccer Samba preparation aided W Connection's CFU success says Oliviera

Samba preparation aided W Connection's CFU success says Oliviera
Monday, 29 January 2007
W Connection?s Brazilian standout William Oliviera Da Silva believes that the good fortunes of his club W Connection comes as a result of the team?s recent preparation in his homeland.
The fullback who has attracted a lot of attention for his speedy attacks down the flank just as much as his rugged never-say-die attitude in defence also credited his performance in the CFU final where his team edged rivals San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 to win the Caribbean Club Championship.
?I think that I had a good game tonight and that I?m playing well at the moment just trying to follow what the coach tells me to do?, Ollivera said.
The player further hinted that despite the attention he is receiving at the moment he plans to stay with his club.
?W Connection is my home I?m not going anywhere?, he assured.
Coach Stuart Charles Fervier in his analysis of the club's accomplishment praised the players for their cumulative effort and thanked them for the victory.
?I think that the guys stuck to the plan and played a good tactical game where we kept possession and moved the ball quickly and that?s why we won? the coach pointed out.
?Coming up against Jabloteh who play a very rough game it?s always difficult but the guys showed good nerve and concentration which is something we are working on? he said.
?I must also give credit to players like Andre Toussaint and William Da Silva Oliviera who really gave good performances in the group stages but I believe that we were not a one man team and that all the players contributed to the success we have achieved tonight?.
The St Lucian born coach ended by saying that his teams next step is to go out and represent Trinidad and Tobago and the entire region in the best way possible.
