Camera eyes Upper Darby High School (PA) Basketball player Elie Daniel
Monday February 21, 2007
He made big leaps in high school - also hits jumpers for the Central League hoop champions
Elie Daniel, a 6-12, 179-pound Upper Darby High senior basketball forward, enjoys his feature role in WCAU-TV's "Upper Darby Project."
"They're following 10 people from our senior class," he said. "They show us every other week on Channel 10 and on their Web site. I talked about how I struggled at first in high school, then found my support group.
"They had a basketball show. I dunked a lot for the camera."
Daniel is a leader on a small and quick team that last week won the school's first Central League boys' basketball championship since 1979.
"What I do best is shoot the ball and play defense," Elie said. "I have a good jump shot from the corner. It doesn't matter which corner. I'm more consistent this year and playing better defense. This year's team is very athletic and we harass people on defense. I have become a vocal leader.
"I scored 21 points against Strawberry Mansion. Against Ridley, I scored 10 points, including a dunk which fired up the team."
Coach Bob Miller says, "Elie is a three-year starter. He's got a real nice jump shot and he goes to the basket a lot. His all-around game is better this year.''
Shooting guard Clinton Cole says, "Elie is a scorer. When we have trouble scoring, he can fill the void. I've played with him four years. He's a good friend. He's good to hang out with.''
Daniel and Cole played for the Eddie Jones team in the Sonny Hill League last summer.
"It was more aggressive,'' Elie said, "and there were more good players than we see in the regular season. We got a better look for college. I played well. I played more defensively.''
Daniel, a B-student, considers himself "a science geek.'' He wants to work in forensic science, his interest inspired by the CSI television shows.
Daniel said his father, Jean (martial arts), and mother, Suzala (semi-pro soccer in Haiti), have been behind him 100 percent through bad times and good times. They've advised him to be patient.
"Soccer was my first sport,'' Elie said. "I was very good when I played soccer in West Philadelphia. I scored a lot of goals.
"My brother Elijah was a good shooter for the Upper Darby basketball team. He taught me to play defense. We played all the time. He never let me win, but I did win some times. Elijah is playing well for Wilmington College. He is studying sports management.''
Livingstone, Randolph-Macon and West Chester are among college basketball programs, which are interested in Daniel.
"Randolph-Macon (Ashland, Va.) found out about me at Narberth,'' Elie said. "Livingstone is in (Salisbury) N.C. I have no idea how they found out about me.''

H.S. Basketball: Cole takes turn as Upper Darby?s leading man
02/22/2007
UPPER DARBY -- When the emotional wave that the Norristown boys basketball team had ridden throughout the first quarter eventually reached its crest, Upper Darby had the visitors positioned right where it wanted them.
Consequently, that foreign taste in the collective mouth of the Royals is that of the state playoffs.
Wednesday night in the second round of the PIAA Class AAAA District One tournament, top-seeded Upper Darby cracked an early tie by scoring the first 10 points of the second quarter to yield just enough breathing room in a 65-58 victory over No. 16 Norristown.
"There?s no way we?re 24-2 this season," Royals coach Bob Miller said with incredulity after his squad earned the program?s first state playoff berth since 1993. "There?s just no way."
With the win, the Central League champions advanced to the district quarterfinals Friday night at West Chester East, where they?ll attempt to defeat a familiar foe, Lower Merion, for the third time this winter.
Clinton Cole, a renowned perimeter shooter, paced the Royals with a career-high 27 points by uncharacteristically attacking the rim and kissing floaters off the glass. Interestingly, the senior guard was forced to warm up without his sneakers after he left them in a friend?s car. Fortunately for the hosts, however, the Nikes were delivered to the gym three minutes before tip-off.
"I was just trying to take it to the cup and give my team a spark," Cole said. "We were just trying to find a way to win."
"I think their plan was to take Elie Daniel out of the game," Miller said. "In giving so much attention to him, they forgot about Clinton.
"And no one on the floor could defend him tonight. He had a pulled hamstring late in the season, so it was nice to see him finishing."
Senior sixth-man Brandon Robinson ignited Upper Darby with a 3-point play that extended its lead to 40-33 with three minutes, 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Robinson quickly added an easy deuce off a steal, then Damone Armstead dropped in a reverse layup that only increased the Royals? comfort level.
Midway through the fourth frame, two free throws by Tad Gillis and a baseline jumper by Armstead had given Upper Darby its biggest lead of the contest at 13 points.
"What these kids have accomplished over the last three months is astounding," Miller said.
Sophomore forward Khayri West contributed nine points and 11 rebounds in the victory.
The Royals advanced despite shooting just 50 percent (12-for-24) from the free-throw line. Combine those numbers with Friday night?s 6-for-18 performance in a first-round triumph over Bensalem, and Upper Darby is converting a paltry 43 percent of its charity in the postseason.
Also, Miller didn?t appreciate the many second-chance points the Eagles put on the board.
"Nobody boxed out tonight," he said. "This is an issue, considering the size that awaits us in the later rounds."
Upper Darby -- in particular Daniel, a three-year starter -- earned a nice measure of redemption by sending Norristown packing for the winter.
"They blasted us in the first round two years ago," said Daniel. "I broke my nose that game and had to play with cotton balls stuffed up there.
"Thankfully, I can now look back and say that was a good learning experience."

Boys Basketball: Upper Darby can?t dig out of early hole
02/24/2007
WEST GOSHEN -- The third time was not the charm for Upper Darby. After defeating Lower Merion twice during the regular season, the top-seeded Royals were upset when it really mattered as the Aces rolled to a 77-53 win in the PIAA Class AAAA District One quarterfinals Friday night.
After falling behind by double digits early in the second quarter, Upper Darby threw its set offense out the window and the game just happened to go with it.
"We haven?t trailed like that all year and it showed," Upper Darby head coach Bob Miller said. "You have to blame the coach here, we stopped running our sets and it turned into a one-man game.
"It?s by far the worst game we played in maybe two years. Things seemed to snowball and we never recovered. Our guys know they can?t win games by themselves, they tried tonight, and this is what happens."
The Royals did get some momentum at the start of the fourth quarter. Upper Darby cut the score to 55-40 with just over six minutes left to play. That is when Lower Merion?s speedy guard Carl Johnson took over.
Johnson scored seven straight points, including a dagger to the heart 3-pointer that put the game out of reach for the Aces. Johnson finished with 17 points.
"I?ve never seen a high school team shoot like that in all of my life," Miller said. "If they can stay hot like they were tonight, they can beat anyone in the state."
Super sophomore Greg Robbins paced the winners with 18 points while also collecting five boards and sending away four shots.
Trailing by three at the end of the first quarter, Upper Darby looked to be in prime position to make a run as Robbins was charged with his third foul and forced to the bench.
Instead the exact opposite happened as Lower Merion held Upper Darby to just five second quarter points. Dropping in 17 of its own in the quarter, Lower Merion?s defense held the Royals scoreless for a stretch of over four minutes.
"You have to give them a lot of credit," Miller said. "They came out with more intensity and to be honest they were better coached. Robbins goes out with his third foul and we can?t stop making stupid plays. We fell apart and the coaches have to be able to stop that."
Lower Merion plays a four-corner offense that is predicated on penetration and slashing. While easy to comprehend, it is efficiently effective when it is properly run and apparently difficult to stop. Simple basketball: Drive, draw, dish.
Despite a tough shooting night, Elie Daniel fought his way to 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Royals. Khayri West dropped in 18 and Clinton Cole scored 11.
Despite the loss, Upper Darby still owns one of the coveted tickets to the state tournament. Miller, however, isn?t sure if his team can learn anything from this loss.
"I don?t really believe in all of those coach?s cliches or sayings," Miller said. "We have to work harder in practice and we have to cut down on the mental mistakes.
"I don?t want to take anything from this loss. Move on and that?s it."
Blame the coach here, Lower Merion did an outstanding job tonight."
