The strikers Jose Luis Garces, Blas Perez, and defender Felipe Baloy lead the list of players called up by coach Alexandre Guimaraes for the upcoming Gold Cup in June being played in the US.
21/MAY/2007 - Garces (OS Belenenses/POR) and Perez (Cucuta Deportivo/COL) have had a satisfactory performance for their clubs, as well as Felibe Baloy (Monterrey/MEX) who is on loan to America, also of Mexico, for the Libertarodes Cup
Guimaraes called up 23 players, of which ten of them play abroad, to participate in the most important tournament of The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). The tournament will take place from June 8 to the 24th in different cities in the US.
The other foriegn based players called up are Nicolás Muñoz (CD Aguila/SLV), Roberto Brown (Colorado Rapids/USA), Jaime Penedo (CA Osasuna/ESP), Román Torres (CDLa Equidad/COL), Gabriel Gómez (Independiente Santa Fe/COL), Juan R. Solís (CD Aguila/SLV), and Víctor Herrera (Puerto Rico Islanders/PUR).
The Panama coach stated during a press confrence that his team will not play a friendly like they had previously thought on June 2, FIFA date, due to the fact his team travels to the US on June 5.
Guimaraes, however, will not alter his training regimen, becuase the important thing was to have the entire team trainning together 10 or 12 days before the start of the tournament.
Panama shares a spot in group C of the Gold Cup, along with Mexico, Honduras, and Cuba. Panama's first match will me against Honduras on June 8, two days later they will play Cuba, and on the 13th they will play Mexico in Houston.
The Panama coach spoke about the group his team was in, and said "its great", especially looking ahead to the next World Cup qualifiers.
