Soccer Football/Soccer - Mini Vorbe interview on Haiti U-17 team situation at JFK Airport

5 Haitian soccer players return home after going AWOL in New York
Posted: Friday June 15, 2007 6:46PM; Updated: Friday June 15, 2007 8:35PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- Five Haitian soccer players of the country's World Cup-bound national youth team who mysteriously disappeared during a stopover in New York returned home Friday, the government said as it announced a probe into the embarrassing incident.
Haitian Sports Minister Fritz Belisaire did not say whether the five teens, who were among 13 of the team's 18 players who went missing, were being punished or if they would be dropped from the team's roster for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in South Korea.
Five other players flew from Haiti to New York on Thursday to join the rest of the team, Haitian consul general Felix Augustin told The Associated Press. All arrived Friday in South Korea to play an exhibition tournament ahead of the World Cup.
The team, all under 17 years old, missed its original flight on Wednesday when the 13 players disappeared during an overnight stopover in New York. They all returned by Thursday and were reunited with their teammates.
No motive has been given for the apparent desertion but Belisaire said Haitian authorities were investigating claims that adults helped the youngsters flee.
"I believe there was manipulation," Belisaire told Haitian broadcaster Radio Metropole. "Thousands of Haitian soccer players would give anything to compete in a World Cup so it's illogical that they would leave before it even begins."
But one player who went missing told Haiti's largest newspaper that the group simply got lost, and that said some players ended up sleeping at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport before reuniting with team officials.
"We did not intend to flee," Pierre Elusma said in comments published Friday in Le Nouvelliste newspaper. "The airport is very big, and we wanted to look around. But we got lost and couldn't find the rest of the group."
Belisaire did not name the five players sent home, although Haitian newspaper Le Matin identified them as St. Cyr Widler, Peterson Desrivieres, Utergens St. Victor, Lesly Guillaume Jr. and Samuel Alcine.
The incident threw Haitian soccer into turmoil and provoked sharp criticism toward the players, who reportedly receive a $1,000 per month stipend for qualifying for the World Cup -- more than double what most Haitians earn in a year.
Belisaire urged the soccer-crazed country to forgive the youths, whom he described as "traumatized" from their ordeal.
"They are young and they made a mistake. We shouldn't point fingers," he said.

Soccer In an interview Mini Vorbe gave to Radio Caraibes FM

In an interview Mini Vorbe gave to Radio Caraibes FM ... Vorbe explains what happen and what occur the Haitian National Team under-17 disappearance at JFK Airport on Tuesday June 12, 2007
The team arrived at JFK Airport Monday evening and where waiting to catch a flight to Korea at Midnight.
Around 12:30 am (Haitian Time, 1:30 AM NYC time) he received a call from the President of Federation of Football Dr Yves Jean Bart (Nickname Dadou) telling him (Mini Vorbe) that 13 players abandon the Haitian NT & Federation at the airport and that they miss their midnight flight to Korea. Dadou ask him (Mini) to contact the FIFA and Korea federation that they would not be attending the tournament because the players abandon the team at the airport.
Mini Vorbe send Korean Federation & FIFA an email explaing to them what happen at JFK Airport. FIFA responded to Vorbe telling him that sanction will be impose on Haitian Federation if they don't attend the tournament or make other arrangement to attend the tournament. The next day – Mini Vorbe took a flight to New York to join the federation & help Dadou resolved this matter regarding the U-17 team.
That's the when the Consulate in New York, Federation and Haitian Community mobilize to find the players and convince them to return to the team. Some players got pick up by a VAN, One player got pick up by his cousin at the airport and some players got lost at the airport during the transfer from one gate to another. They transfer from Gate 8 to Gate 14 at the JFK Airport and they had to go threw airport security, baggage handler and ticket agents. Some players disappear willingly, some when along with the crowd and some got lost.
According Mini Vorbe: When the players arrive in New York the Federation gave each members of the team pocket money (each players had 50 dollars) and all accent-rial (Food, Candy, Magazine and etc) that they needed at the airport
According Mini Vorbe: When US authority got involved they explain to Dadou & Federation that in United States a person 16 years old could go as they please that you cannot prevent them from doing what ever they wish to do (disappear) but since some of the players are under the care of the federation, they don't have enough money in their pocket and they are new to Foreign land that we should try find them and talk to them to make sure that they are okay & that noting happen to them.
That is when Federation & US authority started using the word abandon or deserted (Not Sauve') National team because under INS (Immigration National Service) the players have a Haitian Federation 5 years visa with every 3 months (According to INS reps in Daily News – the renewal is 6 months, not 3 months the way Vorbe said) renewal in their hands. That the players are not illegal in this country. That some players are 16 years old, they could go as they're please and that the players are with family relatives. ......What also made it difficult for US authority is the fact that the guarding in Haiti put the players under the guidance of the Federation and the Federation is responsible for them but they are not Kidnap – They just abandon or deserted the National team
According Mini Vorbe: That's when Peterson (Goalie on Haitian NT U-17) in contact with some players threw they're Digicel Cell Phone started talking the players telling them that we did not come here for that (to abandon the team), That we came here to win the 2007 World Cup in Korea and that we train to win World Cup.
Peterson – Fellows Please come back and 4 or 5 players came back but some had already left in made their way already to very other relatives in New York and 2 of them made their way to Boston.
According Mini Vorbe
: The Haitian Community in New York who are very passionate people and who are a very vocal community in New York mobilizes to find theses players and have them return to the National Team. The Haitian Community feels that the U17 Players are their babies and their a sign of Haitian pride lead a mobilize effort to have the players return to the team.
According Mini Vorbe
: 9 players return to team in New York and the 2 players who made it already to Boston was on their way back to the Haitian Team in New York but One of the Boston player did not return voluntarily.
Chiroc Campi Jean Baptiste when he left Boston for New York ask for political asylum which basically baffle US authority and Haitian Federation because the Haiti is a democratic country & he is a Football players.
What political asylum could Chiroc Campi Jean Baptiste could be asking or facing when he is a 16 years old Football/Soccer players and Haiti is a democratic country where a President is Elected (President Rene Preval elected)
According Mini Vorbe
: When Chiroc Campi Jean Baptiste return to New York, He change his mind about asking for political asylum and wanted to rejoin the team but the Federation did not want to let him join the team. They wanted to ship him back to Haiti but US authority explain to the federation that a person had a right to change their mind and that they are suppose to fly with him to Korea because the Federation is still the players guardian. The Federation change their mind and allow Chiroc Campi Jean Baptiste to fly with the team in Korea ... (That is according Mini Vorbe)
According to Mini Vorbe
: 3 Players have not return to team and nobody seems to know they're where abouts ... no contact with them at all ... 9 returning players & Federation are on their way to Korea (Actually, they are in Korea already and team lost to Ghana 3-0)
Radio Caraibes FM ask Mini Vorbe a question ... Upon the Players returning to the Hotel at the Airport, The image we saw of the players on TV are players who are not well groom or not well taking care or look dirty? ...
Mimi Vorbe answer the question this way. Yes the image you saw of the players on Television at Hotel is what exactly it was (Dirty or not well groom) because the players baggage and their belongings where not in the players possession. They're belongings was already ship to Korea when they miss they're flight on Tuesday. It was already in the plane.. it was unfortunate that the players look that way they did on Television but in their baggage contains all the team jump suit, the team logo shirt and etc that is provided to them by the federation
According Mini Vorbe
: They are several people in the Haitian Community in New York & Florida that the Federation would like to thank because when the team miss their flight to Korea on Tuesday & 4 or 5 players did not abandon / Deserted the team. The Federation & players where trap at the airport. The federation was desperately trying to make arrangement with the hotel for where people where going to stay. Since it was at the last minute the Federation was having difficulty trying secure hotel for the players, coach and delegation to stay.
Some people in Haitian Community in New York (Total Strangers) open their home and their hospitality to give the delegation a place to stay; for that – the Federation and players are very thankful for the Haitian Community in New York. ... (Vorbe said their name on the Radio and I could not type fast enough)
According to Mini Vorbe:
Haitian Community in Florida, a total stranger (Could not type fast enough to get the name) in Florida started doing everything to help the federation out of this mess in New York by sending money, trying to contact players and etc to help the federation – For that also, the Federation, players and delegation is very thankful .....
Interview Conducted today with Mini Vorbe at Radio Cariabes FM (June 16th , 2007)
