Davis Cup Tennis
Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) President Wesley Rolle confirmed yesterday that The Bahamas' Davis Cup team is 'safe and sound' at the Americas Zone Group III Tie in Guatemala City, Guatemala. They are set to kick off action today and climax play on Sunday.
The team, made up of Devin Mullings, Marvin Rolle, Christopher Eldon, H'Cone Thompson and Bjorn (BJ) Munroe are scheduled to see hard court action. Rolle said that the final decision as to who will be representing the country in the matches would solely depend on coach John Farrington.
"They arrived safely and are currently getting in some practice sessions down there. John will have the final say as to who plays in the doubles and singles. He will decide the best time to put whichever player in," said Rolle.
The Bahamas will be going up against other teams listed in the Americas Zone Group III, which include Barbados, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Panama and Puerto Rico. The Bahamas is ranked highest at the Tie, 74th in the world and according to Rolle because of this, The Bahamas has a good chance at being promoted back to Zone II. The Bahamas was relegated to Zone III last year, finishing with a 2-3 win/loss record in Davis Cup play.
The format of the tournament will have eight teams divided into two round-robin pools of four. The first two teams from each pool advance to another round-robin group. The teams finishing first and second in this final pool are promoted to Americas Zone Group II in 2008. The teams finishing third and fourth in each pool also advance to another round-robin pool. The teams finishing in third and fourth in this subsequent pool are relegated to Americas Zone Group IV in 2008.
