BALTIMORE de St Marc of Haiti and American A-League club, Puerto Rico Islanders recorded double-digits win on the second day of round-robin action in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship on Tuesday.
Baltimore led by a beaver-trick from Luxene Elestin punished Jong Colombia of Netherland Antilles 12-0 in Group E at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre.
Elestin items came in the (12th, 22nd, 39th and 56th minutes while Emerlin Nicholas (71st & 77th) and Gabriel Michel (84th & 89th) added a pair of goals each in the win to push their team to maximum six points, and a point away from the quarterfinals.
ot too far away from Pointe-a-Pierre, at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, Islanders made light work of Antigua’s Sap in a 10-0 mauling to improve to four points after two matches in Group C.
Fabrice Noel scored four times for the Islanders (10th, 45th, 47th, 48th) while Albelto Zapata chipped in with a hat-trick (45th, 50th, 73rd), and Victor Herrera, Malco Velez, and Albelto Delgado the others.
Their was also two major upsets as teams continued to jostle for quarterfinal spots in the five group 17-team competition. Cuba’s Pinar del Rio was expected to join Baltimore on maximum points, but was upstaged by Bassa SC of Antigua & Barbuda, 2-1 in the first match at Pointe-a-Pierre.
Reinier Nunez who netted in the Cuban’s 5-1 win over Jong Colombia on Sunday again found the mark for his team in the eight minute. However in the second period, the Antiguans turned things around after Jamie Thomas fired in the equaliser in the 47th minute, Ranja Christian struck the winner in the 63rd to set up an interesting final round of matches tomorrow.
Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe pulled off a shock 2-1 win over former champions, Harbour View of Jamaica in the other match at Marabella.
The Jamaicans who drew 2-2 with Islanders on Sunday took a 16th minute via a Jermaine Hue goal, but on the stroke of half-time Gerard Adensida drew Inter level. And with eight minutes left in the match, Bryen Damba snatched the winner for Inter to leave the Jamaicans on the verge of exiting the competition.
Down at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, Atullah Guerra scored a double as T&T club and 2003 winner CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh began its 2007 campaign with a comfortable win, yesterday.
Guerra opened the scoring for Jabloteh in the 21st while he concluded the scoring in the 79th minute in a 5-0 blow-out of Centro Social Deportivo Barber of the Netherland Antilles in Group A action at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. Jason Gregory also found the target for Jabloteh in the 24th minute to lead 2-0 at the break while Peter Byers (49th) and Shandell Samuel (53rd) added second-half items. Jabloteh now needs only a point from its final match tomorrow at the same venue against SV Deportivo
Nacional of Aruba, who drew 1-1 with Barber on Sunday.
In Group D, SV Leo Victor of Suriname set up a group decider with Jamaica’s Portmore United after beating Helenites of US Virgin Islands 4-0 at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.
Vangillino Sastromadjo scored twice for Leo Victor (51st & 81st) after Randwil Ainsaini (28th) and Sazel Hoog Rorp (33rd) got first-half items. On Sunday, Portmore dumped Helenites 2-0.
In Tuesday’s late match, 1998 winners, Joe Public led by a double from T&T midfielder Kerry Baptiste slammed Sagicor South East United of Dominica 5-0 with all the goals coming in the first-half at Macoya in Group B. Baptiste scored in the 40th and 45th minute while defenders Keyeno Thomas (19th), Terrance Mc Allister (24th) and Gregory Richardson (43rd) were also on the mark. The round-robin series ends on Thursday while quarterfinal matches take place on Sunday.
