Football/Soccer - English Premier League - Reading FC chasing whizkid Josmer Altidore of NY Red Bulls
February 06, 2008

Red Bulls nearly lost Altidore to Reading
Lost in the commotion surrounding the European transfer of Eddie Johnson and the failed transfer move by Brad Guzan was a transfer bid that stayed under the radar and nearly became the biggest story of the MLS off-season.
Red Bulls and U.S. national team forward Jozy Altidore almost transferred to English club Reading. The bid was one of the best kept secrets secrets of January and Altidore came close to joining fellow Americans Marcus Hahnemann and Bobby Convey at the club.
"I've heard a lot about the club and it was an up and coming club that was interested in me," Altidore said. "It looked like it was something that was going to be a good idea for me but the Red Bulls are where I'm going to be.
"This is where my home is going to be right now," Altidore said. "I'm committed to the team and I'm not even worried about what happened."
According to sources, Reading had been scouting Altidore for more than two years and made a serious bid, which Altidore was strongly considering. Reading's inability to sell one of it's players during the transfer window may have caused the potential deal to fall apart.
Currently in 17th place in the English Premier League, one point out of the relegation zone, Reading had targeted Altidore to help the club's struggling offense, which has been shut out in four straight matches. Reading is currently on a nine-match winless streak (0-8-1).
So why did Altidore consider Reading? The chance to play right away in the English Premier League, as opposed to going to a bigger club and not playing much, was appealing, as well as the fact that Reading had been following Altidore closely for years.
Altidore is expected to be a major transfer target again this summer (He also received serious interest from Real Madrid this winter) but the chances of a Reading deal appear remote.
"It was a whole process and it just didn't work out,' Altidore said of his talks with Reading. "I'm still happy to be with New York because I've watched this team since I was growing up.
"This is the team I wanted to play for in the beginning and the team I'm playing for now and I wouldn't have it any other way."

Royals chase whizkid Altidore
READING are hot on the heels of United States whizkid Jozy Altidore, writes NICK IVE.
The Royals made a move for the Red Bull New York striker in the January transfer window, but were knocked back by Major League Soccer, who own the contracts of all the players.
But Reading will continue to monitor the 18-year-old, who is regarded as one of the hottest properties in the States.

Director of football Nick Hammond told the Evening Post: “We spoke to the MLS about him but it was clear they didn’t want him to go.
“He is a talented young player and we will continue to monitor him.”
Altidore netted 13 goals in 33 appearances for Red Bull New York (formerly the Metrostars) during last season.
He has also netted four goals in five appearances for the United States’ Under-20 side as well as one goal in three appearances for the senior team – earlier this month against Mexico.
Reading’s Bobby Convey also played in that game.
Spanish giants Real Madrid are also believed to be watching Altidore.
Meanwhile Glen Little has been told he can step up his fitness programme.
The Royals winger has been sidelined since the end of last season with an Achilles injury, but he is now back running.
And he has been given the all-clear by his surgeon to step up his training regime.
Physio Jon Fearn told readingfc.co.uk: “We’ve seen Glen’s surgeon and he was very happy with the progress. It all went as expected.
“We’ll progress from here and the time period will be dictated by when he’s physically ready to train.
“The tendon will take a good time to heal completely, but that wouldn’t stop him getting back to playing football.”
Little revealed a couple of weeks ago that he is aiming to return to action for Reading’s final half-a-dozen-or-so games.
But Fearn added: “We don’t want to push him too soon. I think March might be optimistic, but we’ll see how it goes.”
Michael Duberry has also made an excellent recovery from his knee injury and could be back in contention for the home clash with Aston Villa on Sunday February 24.
Brynjar Gunnarsson (groin) remains sidelined, while Bobby Convey will be hoping for a recall for the Villa game having returned home following an injection in his knee.
Ivar Ingimarsson is back from suspension, while Emerse Fae and Andre Bikey have returned from Ghana where they played in the African Cup of Nations for their respective countries Ivory Coast and Cameroon.
— JOHN HALLS has returned to Reading following his loan spell at Championship side Crystal Palace.
The right-back made five appearances for the Eagles, but they now have Danny Butterfield back from injury, so Palace boss Neil Warnock has allowed Halls to return to Madejski Stadium.
However, he could return to Selhurst Park at a later date.
Warnock said: “After one month we couldn’t take him until the end of the season, we could only take him for 93 days which would take us to the end of March.
“It could be that we take him later in the season if needs be.”
Reading have a host of other players currently out on loan.
Sam Sodje is at Charlton, Graham Stack (Wolves), Alex Pearce and James Henry (Norwich), Hal Robson Kanu (Southend), Adam Bygrave (Gillingham), Simon Church (Yeovil), Ben Hamer (Brentford), Scott Davies (Aldershot) and Curtis Osano (Rushden).
