Football/Soccer - Josmer Altidore introduced today at Villarreal in La Liga
June 11, 2008
SIGNED, NOT SEALED, DELIVERED
Altidore agrees to sign 6-year contract with Villarreal in La Liga; physical pending
Red Bulls forward Jozy Altidore has agreed to terms on a six-year contract with Villarreal, the Spanish First Division club's website reported.
Altidore, who was transferred to the club by MLS and the Red Bulls in a $10 million deal will meet with the club. He will be introduced to the media at a press conference at Villarreal Academy, where he will take a medical examination and finalize the details on his deal.
The 18-year-old Altidore leads the Red Bulls with three goals this season.
The Livingston, N.J.-born player cannot join Villarreal until the European transfer window opens up July 1.
Altidore is expected to be loaned to another La Liga club next season. Recreativo Huelva and Real Valladolid have been mentioned as possibilities.
According to the Spanish daily Marca, however, Villarreal might not loan out Altidore if the team thinks he can work his way into the lineup.
The Red Bulls will receive two-thirds of the $10 million transfer fee, which could wind up a little more or less than that amount, depending on how Altidore plays and the exchange rate, MLS sources said.
The club also will be able to spend $500,000 toward the signing and acquisition of new players.
Morning Ticker: Altidore loan not set in stone
Good morning folks. Apologies for the delay in getting the day started but a blackout in North Bergen, home of the SBI compound, last night and this morning was to blame.
Let's get to some news:
Altidore may stay with Villarreal
As we reported last night, Jozy Altidore is set to be introduced at Villarreal today and now comes word from Spanish daily Marca that Altidore may stay with the 'Yellow Submarine' a while. According to the report, Villarreal is considering not loaning Altidore to another club for his first season in Spain, which was being suggested in various reports the past week. Concerns over the fact that Altidore is set to miss a majority of pre-season training to play in the Olympics coupled with a desire to assure that Altidore has a smooth transition to Spain has Villarreal officials considering keeping him.
Is that good news? I think it could be. He will have a chance to train with one of Spain's top teams, a team that will be competing in the Champions League, and if he does well enough he could certainly see some playing time. Might we see the Altidore-Rossi forward tandem sooner than expected? All kidding aside, I see Altidore making a mid-season loan move out to a team like Recreativo Huelva once he has had a chance to settle. That's assuming he doesn't work his way into Villarreal's rotation.
