GOALKEEPER SCORES EQUALIZER
Riders men tie Ironbound Express, 3-3
New Hyde Park, L.I. -- The Long Island Rough Riders men needed an 11th-hour equalizer by goalkeeper Hasely Holder to salvage a 3-3 draw with the Newark Ironbound Express in a Premier Development League match at Michael Tully Park Saturday night.
Andrew Herman set up the tying goal for the Rough Riders (4-1-4, 16 points).
The Riders grabbed the lead off an Adam Himeno goal from a Tadeu Terra assist in the 33rd minute.
But a minute into the second half, Jerrod Laventure tied it up with a penalty kick.
The hosts, however, grabbed the lead again on a Ben Arikian score in the 49th minute.
The expansion Ironbound Express (4-2-4, 16) struck back only a minute later for a 2-2 deadlock on a Justin McGrath goal, off a Laventure assist.
Newark took the lead for the first time on Robert Larocca's 60th-minute tally.
The Rough Riders next play at the Brooklyn Knights (6-1-2, 20) at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, N.Y. Wednesday at 8 p.m

Soccer Newark Settles For Tie After Rough Riders Hit Stoppage Time Goal

Newark Settles For Tie After Rough Riders Hit Stoppage Time Goal
Newark, N.J. (Saturday, June 21, 2008) – One week after severe weather caused the Newark Ironbound Express (4-2-4) to settle for a draw in only 68 minutes of play against the Long Island Rough Riders (4-2-4), an extra time notch by Long Island goalkeeper Hasely Holder forced the same result. After the stunning goal in injury time, the Express settled for a 3-3 decision against the Rough Riders (4-1-4).
In what was a seesaw match-up, Long Island struck first in the 33rd minute when midfielder Tadeu Terra set up a tally for midfielder Adam Himeno, and the Rough Riders held off Newark to take that 1-0 advantage into the intermission at halftime.
In the opening minute of the second half, the reigning PDL Player of the Week Jerrod Laventure was taken down in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick to equalize for the Express. Long Island took back the lead in the 49th minute as midfielder Ben Arkian hit an unassisted goal, but Laventure set up a Justin McGrath knock one minute later to knot up the two clubs at two each. Newark earned their first advantage of the contest in the 60th minute when Monmouth University product Rob LaRocca sent home a solo strike, and the Express led 3-2.
For the next 30 minutes, near opportunities turned into near misses for both teams. Rough Rider head coach Dan Fisher pulled goalkeeper Thomas Booth in favor of Holder in the 63rd minute, and the decision would pay off when the game headed into stoppage time. With the win seemingly in grasp, Newark forced a last-chance corner kick for Long Island. Fisher opted to bring up Holder to join the attack, and Rough Rider defender Danny Kramer sent the ball into play. After a touch by forward Andy Herman, Holder struck the ball past Express goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski to send the home crowd into an uproar.
With the no-decision, Newark is now in a four-way tie for second place in the PDL Northeast Division. The Express return to action this Wednesday when they host the Ocean City Barons (4-2-4) at Lubetkin Field. The game is slated for an 8:00 p.m. start-up time.
