Football/Soccer - Haiti trounced Dominica 4-0 in New York's Caribbean Football Cup
St. Kitts upset Grenada in Caribbean Cup
Wednesday June 25 2008

BROOKLYN, New York (CMC) - A very spirited St. Kitts team Sunday overpowered one of the so-called powerhouses in New York's Caribbean Football Cup, convincingly beating Grenada 3-1 at the Jefferson High School Stadium.
Playing in the preliminary round of the 12-team championship, the youthful St. Kitts completely dominated the final of three scheduled matches, repeating, by similar margin, last season's feat over the "Spice Boys."
Grenada, last season's finalist, simply could not match the aggression of the St. Kitts team, which took the lead 30 minutes into the first half when Aiden Nurse eluded goalkeeper Emano Martin to his right, hitting a low shot into the back of the net.
A mere two minutes later, George Isaac demonstrated St. Kitts' "no nonsense" style by blasting a direct kick past Martin eight yards outside the penalty box.
Isaac put the result of the match beyond doubt, five minutes later, when he nudged past Martin.
The robust tackling from the Grenadians eventually forced Isaac out of match contention, but the rest of the St. Kitts team held firm, only conceding Grenada's lone goal five minutes before the final whistle through Chris Charles.
"I feel pretty comfortable that we will go all the way to the finals this year," he told CMC Sport in a post-game interview. "We have a few more (things to work on), but we'll get there."
Dalton Jones, Grenada's head coach, said he was very disappointed with his team's performance.
"We didn't play half as well as we should have," he said. "Give kudos to St. Kitts. They played a beautiful game."
In the other two matches Sunday, Antigua and Barbuda and Barbados drew 2-2, and Haiti trounced Dominica 4-0.
Kevin Christian and Kelly Federick converted for Antigua and Barbuda, and Paul Lovell and Dwayne Lynch did the same for Barbados.
Haiti's goals came from the boots of Roland Andre, Nedgy Nazone, Ed Nelson, and Abraham McKenzie.
This Sunday's triple-header will feature St. Kitts battling Trinidad & Tobago, five-time Cup champions St. Vincent & the Grenadines duelling St. Lucia, and Dominica opposing the mighty three-time champs Jamaica.
