Jean-Francois handed second chance by Aberdeen
Haiti defender given chance to impress dons as he starts pittodrie trial
Aberdeen have given Lescinel Jean-Francois a second chance in Scottish football by handing the Haiti international a Pittodrie trial.
The 21-year-old was in the squad for last night's friendly at Brechin.
Aberdeen got their first win of pre-season last night as Derek Young's long-range strike gave the Dons a 1-0 victory at Brechin City.
Aberdeen's win was marred, however, by the news that defender Zander Diamond suffered a recurrence of a foot injury picked up at the end of last season.
Dons manager Jimmy Calderwood said: "Zander is a worry, he might be out for a few weeks, we will have to see how serious it is.
"We had Scott Severin injured in training and Gary McDonald and Start Duff are also injured, so we are short of defenders at the moment.
"We will take Zander to Holland with us, but where he plays is anther thing. We will assess it as we go on.
"There were some plus points and some negative points. I though Charlie Mulgrew did well and young Peter Pawlett was terrific."
Jean-Francois, who launched his career with Paris Saint Germain, spent a turbulent four-month period with Falkirk in 2006, but has returned to Scottish soil in an attempt to win a Dons contract.
His spell with the Bairns got off to a bad start when he failed to report for duty after a mix-up with flights from France. Then he infuriated manager John Hughes by returning to the continent for a family funeral without warning, missing key games in the process.
The French citizen's career at Westfield came to an end when the club failed to track him down to get a response to the offer of a one-year contract.
Despite the off-field frustrations, the powerfully built defender impressed for Falkirk during 10 league and cup appearances as he helped preserve the club's SPL status.
Jean-Francois spent last season with Guingamp in the French Second Division, having also turned out for Sedan at the same level.
Jean-Francois, who can play on the left of defence or through the centre, will be joined at the Dutch base by teenage trialist Dyon Camero.
Camero spent a week at Pittodrie in April and did enough to persuade Calderwood to take a second look.
The 19-year-old centre forward has been turning out for amateur side FC Zutphen in the Netherlands.
Calderwood said: "Dyon did very well when he came across to Scotland earlier in the year and I would like to see him in a couple of the games we have planned for Holland."

Soccer Defender facing six weeks out

Diamond injury blow for Aberdeen
Defender facing six weeks out

INJURED: Aberdeen defender Zander Diamond.

DONS defender Zander Diamond could be out for six weeks after aggravating a foot injury during the 1-0 friendly win over Brechin City.
Diamond will definitely be sidelined for the next 10 days after being ordered to rest completely in the hope the injury, which has plagued the centre-back since last season, clears.
But manager Jimmy Calderwood admitted Diamond faces the prospect of being out for at least a month after that if the rest cure fails to work.
“It’s a major worry because Zander is such a big part of our plans for the new season,” said Calderwood.
“The club doctor says we have to give Zander 10 days of complete rest and take it from there.
“If Zander doesn’t recover it could be another four or five weeks after that before he is fit, but we are trying not to look at it that way at the moment.
“Hopefully the rest period will ensure he is ready to face Inverness Caley Thistle in the league opener. We will just have to keep our fingers crossed for that.”
Zander, who was substituted early in the second period and spent the remainder of the evening with an ice pack applied to his injured foot, said: “There is no way I want to miss the start of the season.
“The injury has been bothering me for a while, but I thought it had cleared up. I came off as soon as I realised there was a problem and I’m hoping that has helped.”
Skipper Scott Severin, Stuart Duff, Lee Mair and summer signing Gary McDonald have also picked up knocks, although they – like Diamond – will travel to their pre-season training camp in Holland tomorrow.
Calderwood said: “Seve picked up a knock in training and the others were injured playing.
“Duff is likely to be out for a week, but I’m hoping the others will be fine by the weekend.”
Diamond’s injury means Haiti international trialist Lescinel Jean-Francois will get his chance in Thursday’s friendly against Dutch lower league side DZC.
The former Falkirk player was an unused substitute at Brechin.
Calderwood said: “It’s the ideal chance to see what the lad can do.
“He didn’t settle at Falkirk, mainly because he couldn’t speak English.
“He has sorted that now though, so we have taken up the option to see how he does in Holland. It’s up to him from here on.”
The Dons will also be met in Holland by young striker Dyon Camero, who spent a period on trial at Pittodrie last season.
The 19-year-old is with amateur side FC Zutphen.
Dutch winger Jeffrey de Visscher is also clear to travel after his partner, Marijke, gave birth to a daughter on Sunday afternoon. The new arrival is a sister for their other child, Julia.
Calderwood said: “It’s been a hectic few days for Jeffrey, and we are all pleased for him and his family.”

I’d Haiti to leave without a contract
Defender wants deal
Published: 22/07/2008
HAITI international defender Lescinel Jean-Francois wants to win a three-year deal with Aberdeen.
The centre-back has been given two weeks to impress Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood, and will travel across for the tour of Holland.
Jean-Francois spent a turbulent four-month spell with Falkirk in 2006.
The former Paris St Germain stopper was axed by Bairns boss John Hughes when he returned to France for a family funeral without warning.
He said: “I want to win a three-year deal with Aberdeen and stay with the club for the long-term.
“Unlike Falkirk, I am not coming to Scotland for six months this time.
“When I was at Falkirk I was very young, only 18, and I did miss my family a lot.
“Now I am older and I can stay for a long time in Scotland.
“I am a free agent, so any move would be easy.”
The towering defender has spent the last two seasons playing in the French Second Division with EA Guingamp.
He also spent two years at the same level with CS Sedan.
But the defender, who was an unused substitute in the 1-0 friendly win over Brechin City, insists his game is better suited to the SPL.
“I am a very physical defender and my best position is centre-back,” he said.
“Although I have spent the last few years in France, my time at Falkirk helped show me that my style is suited to Scotland.
“Scottish football is my game because I am powerful and love tackling.
“I love the physical side of the game, and the French style is not really for me.
“That is why I was at Falkirk and why I want to play for Aberdeen.”
The 21-year-old was part of the Haiti squad that failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.
Lescinel played in all three qualifiers against Mexico, Canada and Guatemala.
“I will travel to Holland and play in games so it is vital I do a good job over the next two weeks,” he said.
“It is important to me to do everything I can to win a deal with Aberdeen.”
