WEST HAVEN, Conn. --A University of New Haven soccer goalie is in critical condition at a Boston hospital with a head injury he suffered during a game at Merrimack College.
James Hilaire is being treated in the surgical intensive care unit at Boston Medical Center. New Haven President Steven Kaplan has e-mailed students asking them to keep Hilaire and his family in their thoughts.
A school official says Hilaire was knocked unconscious Wednesday night when he took a knee to his head and broke his jaw. The game at Merrimack in North Andover, Mass., was suspended.
Hilaire's soccer team profile says he is a senior majoring in criminal justice, and he was born in Haiti.
UNH's Thoughts and Prayers With Charger Men's Soccer Player
(09-25-08) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven's thoughts and prayers are with injured men's soccer goalie and Criminal Justice major James Hilaire and his family and friends.
The University's President Steven Kaplan sent the following e-mail to the campus community Thursday morning:
University of New Haven Charger [men's] soccer goalie and team leader James Hilaire '09 Criminal Justice, suffered a serious injury after a collision with an opposing player during a game Wednesday evening against Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. James was taken to Boston Medical Center, the primary teaching affiliate for the Boston University School of Medicine. The hospital has the largest 24-hour Level 1 trauma center in New England.
James is in critical condition at this time and is under close observation in the hospital's Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Please keep James and his family in your thoughts. Students who need assistance in coping with this news are encouraged to contact the UNH Counseling Center at 932-7332, the Residence Life staff at 932-7076 or meet with a resident assistant or director.
Those who wish to send expressions of support to James may mail notes and cards (flowers are not permitted in the ICU) to James Hilaire, c/o Boston Medical Center, One Boston Medical Center Place, Boston, MA 02118.

The Charger men's soccer game scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. against Assumption College has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
