upgrade did not occur yet. server just went down, and i believe i finally found the reason. before we had our mail system, the free mail accounts were being hosted at a place named bigmailbox.com and we had 12,000 accounts there.

In the new email system here in May, i put a command to send all unknown mails to a specific address.... and bigmailbox was spamming its list of 12000 users daily, many times a day (they had sold the mailing list) so we were getting bombarded with junk mails going to a legitimate catch all account... so server resources were being exhausted. And mysql kept on screaming for mercy.

What's the solution ? Close the emails accounts ?

Or "treat" the emails as spam before they get into the server ?

solution was very simple: disable the Luser relay command. My friend who helped me setup the mail system was having a hard time, so he activated it. This way it was guaranteed that ALL mails will go to the system, even if there were no users. And I never checked the system.

This morning I found out that he was having a hard time because he had put @haitiwebs.com instead of haitiwebs.com, so the system could not receive emails, making him to use Lrelay user.

Once I remove that @ mail was fine and lrelay could be disabled. Now we only get emails for legitimate users. As a result, resources are preserved and everything, including posting is faster.

Have been busy lately, so did not have much time to spend here.
