Haiti's sad bicentennial

SUMMARY: There is little or nothing to celebrate in Haiti, 200 years after its people won independence from France to become the world's first black republic. But President Jean-Bertrand Aristide intends to celebrate the anniversary today, regardless of the fact that by spending money on festivities and invited foreign guests, he will be insulting the Haitian people.Day in and day out, most Haitians are mired in poverty and beset by violence. Long the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti is getting poorer. Four-fifths of its population earns less than $2 a day and life expectancy has fallen from 55 to 49 years in the last decade.

Think whatever one?s position can be, the facts layout in this article can be denied. We have done anything for two hundred years. Instead of progressing, we are regressing in all aspects. Education is getting worst and worst. We missed the industrial revolution. We are missing the information revolution. We don?t have any infrastructures in the country. We don?t even have a well-paved national route in the country. We lack of everything that could help us to get out of the deep and dark hole that we are. Unless we are conscious that our people need to be educated so they can think, we will never get out of the hole. We can?t think about development when our educational system is getting worst in a world that is advancing technologically.
It is unfortunate to realize that people that can be very useful to the country?s educational advancement, the most important key to progress, are outside serving other societies. When our own society is rejecting us or doesn?t have anything to offer to us, others are welcoming us because they are strong believers of an educated society. Unfortunately, it seems that the notion of educating our people so they can judge and make decisions on their own or without a know it all telling them what to do, the country will celebrate a tercentennial in conditions even worst than today?s.

Rosalvo Bobo told them in 1904 that in 2004 thing could be worst if they do not change their way.Now 100 years after we realize that he was right;let us hope that there will be a country named Haiti in 2104 where the people can find water, food, medecine etc.
