US sets application period for immigration green cards

Washington- The US government will accept applications for the lottery system for immigration green cards beginning next month, the US State Department said Tuesday. The application period for the 2008 Diversity Visa Lottery will begin on October 4 and close on December 3. Applicants may only apply electronically at
www.dvlottery.state.gov.
The lottery programme provides permanent residence visas for living in the United States. About 55,000 green cards are handed out each year through the computer generated lottery.
Citizens from more than a dozen countries will not be allowed to participate because in the last five years they have received 50,000 green cards.
Those countries include: Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador,
Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Korea, United Kingdom and Vietnam.
