SANTO DOMINGO - President Leonel Fernández, his former chief advisor and a former senator will compete for their party's presidential nomination, a party official said Sunday.
Fernández, who will be seeking a third term in office; Danilo Medina, the president's longtime collaborator and chief advisor; and former lawmaker José Tomás Pérez will face off in their center-right Dominican Liberation Party presidential primary on May 6, said Reynaldo Pared Pérez, Senate president and a party leader.
They were chosen to run by the party's central committee during a short meeting, Pared Pérez said. Some one million party members will vote in the primary.
The winner will face the opposition party candidate, Miguel Vargas Maldonado, of the center-left Dominican Revolutionary Party, in the May 16 presidential election.
Other parties also are expected to field candidates.
